geez these title contests are getting on my nerves....i cant just make poem out of some one elses idea..my poems come from the heart..not the brain..and thats how poems SHOULD be. geez..make a contest of the heart..not one of some one elses ideas.

i like that perspective. but i guess it can't hurt to have a few title contests, i mean, it's a challenge, and it's for fun and prevents all the cntests being the same. but yeah, i do think there are too many, and it should be ur own from the heart.

I never thought I could do title contests either, but I tried one and I thought I did pretty well personally for my first try but then I didn't place...it didn't bother me, but other than that I agree. There has been a lot of them...

writing is from the heart........and title contest just give an idea.....you can be reading a title and it could just come to you! I thought it would be fun to do one! but i have got the chance!

are you currently hosting a 'contest of the heart'? I don't understand what the point of this thread is... if you dislike title contests then you can simply not participate. People frequently use titles as inspiration. A title can spawn two entirely different poems from two different poets... or even from the same poet.

Beyond that, there have been poetry contests that required that poets follow a certain form instead of title.

well..every single contest ive seen on here is a title contest..and i simply can not write a poem with out haveing a straight feeling of what im writing first...an emotion, titles dont inspire me...life and they way people act inspire me. how am i suppose to enter of these so called fun contests if my emotion cant be tested but by only titles on which some one has made...u guys can have ur fun..but im going to keep the text my heart has created...and thank u for those who have agreed with me..but those who havnt..need to realize the limit the true self emotional poets have...this thread is not meaningless..it gives off an opinion....or just an emotion..like a poem should give off.

I totatly agree with david, poems should come from what we feel,,, and not some1 else idea, i tried to do one of the contest with titles,, and nothing came to mind, i mean i cant write with some1 title, i can write my own title and poem...

I disagree. I like title contest because they strike imagination if you write a poem that is more creative with the title then just what a title may describe. There are many different interpretations of any one title BECAUSE each poem comes from a poets heart.

An example is "Bad day" which i chose from a group of titles in a contest. This could be about a day in the life of a child, a day where someone dies, a day where a woman is abused by her husband for the first time, a day in the life of a teen where shes made a fool of, a day when someone is relying on God after going through a rough patch. Thats just a couple of ideas.

A title doesn't limit you or your expressions, your mind does.

every poem does not come from the heart...that example, does it have anything to do with ur childhood? is te title u choose from a resemblence of ur misfortune? when u feel like crying..write a poem about it, when u feel happy..write a poem about it, when u feel angry..write a poem about it...these title poems arnt meant to come from the heart...they make them for u guys to have fun. now i joined this site to share my feelings and whats going on in my life through poetry..now im not saying its bad to have fun...but thats not what poetry is about. and a title can limit ur expression..because if none of those titles match what ur life has been like or a friends life has been like then writing a poem from the HEART wouldnt be an option..because u have no empathy on which the title is meant to describe. maybe if ur lucky u will find a title on the list that has to do with something that came from ur heart...not just another piece of the game board ur lil title contests resemble.

dont get down becoz of Title contests. ya we liked it and then it kept repeating and got annoying... but some people break that trend with their own contest ^^ with no titles. how about it?

ya i agree..there are good contests out there, its not all title contests..but it just seems like they are over populated in the contest area...theres some good ol fashion contests..but unfortunately they are rare now a days

come on? Our Lady Peace's titles can be interpreted so many ways...play with the words, and interject your feelings. expand your mind!

  • David Marshall

that makes no sense what so ever, interject your feelings??? are u crazy... my feelings come from experiences, not some friggin title some person i dont even know makes up for me to make a poem about...oh look a title named ''forgotten tears'' am i suppose to make a poem out that with my feelings? shoot, im not forgotten...when i make a poem it has to do with me...my feelings...my expression of a title...and my life, how bout i lable you..and tell u how to describe yourself? does that sound like a good idea? if u liked wathcing scary movies and i only layed out options of comedy, drama, or adventure..would that be pretty reasonable? im sooo srry if i cant express feelings that have nothing to do with me or my life...but im not srry that my poems are actually how I feel...and not some title that some one wants to us to act like how we WOULD feel in such a situation.

im tired of other ideal feelings from these titles...dont try to change how i think about it...im just laying out facts. what more do i have to say

Poetry doesnt always come from your own experiences and neither should it. Its great to share how you feel and thats how i started writing, but thats not just the point of it. Theres more to life then how you feel and generally most of your poetry ends up sounding the same. But by expressing your opinions or imagining to be in someone elses place you have to think about the feelings of OTHERS and learn about how you interact with others, how others interact with you and how the world works.

Every piece of poetry is truly yours whether you've experience it or not it still comes from your heart.

well if u have no empathy, then u cant be in others peoples place...and if u have no empathy then how can it come from the heart....and i know its not always about my life..i write poems about my friends all te time..but i already know how they feel...trying to THINK about the feelings of others and KNOWING the feelings of others are 2 diferent things...how can it be from the heart is if all u do is think..isnt that from the mind? not that heart....what do u think about when ur writing a poem from which some one has made the title already? do u feel like uve actually been in there shoes? or are u just trying to see how creative u can be about the subject? i still dont believe that its from the heart...its all propoganda to show creativity and skill on ur text thoughts. if u can think of a good poem..wow thats great, but its not from the heart unless u were inspired...when u enter one of those contests, the steps are taken liek this...oh lets see ill choose this title, now lets think..umm yea oh ok i have a great IDEA on what to write about the subject, omg i hope i win i spent so much time thinking of soo many diferent ways to make this title some one has left me the option of choosing, even though i probably would be way better off preticipating in a contest that has to do with the poems ive made that i didnt need any help from other ppl giving me ideas what to write about..i think ill stick with my originals...thank you.

i have contests like ALL the time and not many of them are title ones anymore....not EVERYONE uses title contests. and to be a good poet you should be able to not just have it come from the heart, but be able to write one to a title to make you get better and better at being a poet. and i dont think this is the place to put this forum it should be in discussions.....just saying. and you don't need to say it outloud, if title contests bug u, like someone said, don't answer. some people do amazing with title contests..yes they are harder to write, but it makes you better and better each time....

  • David Marshall

well i know not to join them if they i dont like them..but i just wanted to see what others have to say, im curious...and im not saying it doesnt increase ur skills as a poet..im just saying, it just makes more sense when it comes from the heart..thats just the way i write...i simply cant write it unless im in the mood...emotionaly. and i know not every one uses title contests but there are more title contests than there are anything else. i just felt like saying some thing about it.

  • Wasted Fake Smiles

poems about deep feelings tend to be trite. because deep feelings really aren't that interesting.
feelings get old. esp your own feelings.
