Why does this site fail to enforce proper grammar?

This is a simple question that has been lingering in my head for quite some time. Can any Moderator answer this question?

  • None

Ugh... I am constantly telling the other users of this site to use proper grammar. They tend to find it rude, something which I cannot believe.

If the mods did do what you suggested, the few poems that would be left on the site would be the only ones worth reading.

Then why is the site itself doing nothing?

Who can I speak with to change this nagging problem?

    My mistake, not change...

    Correct.

Thank you Sunny. Maybe the appearance of this site should be changed in order to reflect the less-than-serious manner of the poets who assume rolls inside of it (Or some of the poets, at least...)

    On't subject o' grammar 'n' what Tia said abaht poem's bein' unique: Ah've mention' 'fore't the's dialectised poetry 'n's a result yer c'n tek lib'ties. If'n yer dein it in a di'lect, lake.

But the fact is that most of the grammatical issues on here just make the writer seem lazy, slow, or... worse. In a day and age where MS Word will do everything for you there is NO REASON to post crap English on this site.

As Sunny said: it's a literary site. An' 'appen ah think us'd be berra fer t'stick wi it reet. Reet?

I don't approve of mispelling just for the sake of being punky-like and cool... besides which it is not cool and makes it difficult to read...but perhaps it DOES sound, um, well, a bit stuck-up to mention spelling SO much, because some people simply cannot spell...
I am sorry to sound blunt or rude, but I realize that not everyone has received proper schooling and can in fact spell.
Others, though, can spell if they want, and just don't bother, which I don't approve of.
That's just me. Sorry to be a bore.

and I find if the poem has spelling errors and poor grammar, I wont finish reading it....

^ To what extent? I don't like reading poems written in text language, but I know my spelling isn't perfect and it's probably the same for my grammar. If I see a mistake/s in a poem I tell the writer in the comment, rather than just not reading the poem... That way we can all improve instead of just moaning about it...

    Tia,

Color and colour are both correct spellings. One word is just more common in American, the other is more common in Britain.

  • Ed or Ian Henderson

Accepted spelling is not an issue.

    Or:

xptd splin iz nt n ishu lol!1!!!!!1!!

I'll tell you what: there's not one single "poet" on this site using teenyspeak that will have their poetry known in 50 let alone a 100 years time. While Shelley, Poe, Sassoon, and Frost will still be cultural legends worthy of their station.

Most of the time I just give up explaining grammar, especially punctuation with these people. I am no expert myself in fact quite the opposite but I do my best. Sometiems its just pathetic though and I swear I read only 1 out of every 10 poems that has any attempt at punctuation in it at all!

When I first joined Poems-and-Quotes.com, I thought that I was joining a group of honest, hard-working poets. I quickly found out that that was not the case at all. This site is becoming more of a hassle for me than a delight. Each time I sign in, I yearn to read great poems, poems from poets who have real knowledge and great potential; but I end up reading poorly written poems from poets who take writing to a new low. This site is hardly worth my time.

  • BrokenMisery

I agree. I used to work through poems and comment on them, and read a lot of what is out there, these days I've given up. These days you have to spot a good poet and go reading some of their work.

I wanted to grow in poetry and when i joined this site, I honestly sucked and was at that low, but its the people that have no interest in writting anything but

" My life hurts, oh so much pain
    so I grabbed my knife
to wash my blood down the drain
so I can end my life"

I don't have a problem with depressed poems or sad poems, it just gets pointless when they wont sit down and at least attempt to make it poetic, and learn that the definition of poetic or poem is not that it rhymes.

come on guys, there are still some awesome poets here like Kristen, Tabby, Ele, Jordan and many more.
there are some new poets here that the content of there poems arent perfect, arent awesome but at leats they try. I think there are still some great writes on here.
    don't underestimate what you read.

I reckon most of you need to back up a little and realize that there is a new way of writing, and though it may seem garish and idiotic to some, it is in many ways, very similar to old forms of writing, particularly where I come from in Scotland, where writing and speaking was, what would be considered now, in mordern english, overly simplistic abbreviation of language. Language changes with the times, poetry of all art forms is a record of this...therefor i don't think we should be pushing to have new ways of expression denied. I'll leave you all with a wee bit o auld scots to show my point.

    'Appeneth a getcha! :-D

Seriously though: if people don't like the site based on the crap here, I have a one word solution.

    Leave.

Me, I've just taken to avoiding the painfully dull suicidathon of the youngsters here. But then some of them can also write some pretty beautiful and enchanting stuff when they put their minds to it.

  • donk2ymouth

The site could be more strict about it, moderators could administer warnings for poems that are completely slang in catergories other than slang, and then after a bunch of warnings on one poem the poem could be deleted for the member not fixing the errors?

  • Kevin

No way Justin, you can forget that idea right now.

I will never tell someone how to write, slang or no, unless they want to write in a different /comvetional way and ask for it.

Why don't I suggest you write a different way, because I've read your work and I don't like the style.

I blame mobile phones personally.. Because You have to cram everything into a text message You spend all day shortening words, so as not to cost You so much.. I just think that some people [trying not to be stereotypical here] [but mainly the youngsters], have just gotten into the habit of text writing..

I personally like to enjoy reading poetry, and when I have to spend time working out what it is supposed to be saying, it takes the enjoyment away and I get bored very quickly.. If I see a poem title and it is written in text style, I don't even bother looking at the poem.

Spelling mistakes though, do not bother me.

  • Polly

Sorry, but I can't believe people are complaining because the quality of some poets work isn't up to the standard they would like... Sure, it's nicer to read a poem by a really talented poet than someone who's work is poor quality, but I thought this site was to improve our work as well as share it with others? I count on other people telling me WHY my work isn't as good as it could be, not that it is just bad...

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick on what people were trying to say...

I read in a magazine that a lot of people in highschool write like they were in elementry school. I wasn't surprised when my STRICT English teacher gave practically everybody in her class a F or a D on an essay paper.

How can you enforce grammar when award winning poems have had lines like:

    Wzzzxyxxxxxzzzzk

My point is that not all poems have grammar. Some don't even have legible words. Admittedly in this case I agree with you completely and I do think grammar, diction and punctuation should be improved upon with each poem, but the second you tell a teenager to do something... well, you get the idea.

Anyways, I avoid the G word and go with punctuation and explain how how proper use of punctuation can guide a reader through a poem.

That seems to get more bang for it's buck than simply suggesting proper grammar.

  • Truest Lies

I think that not all poets here KNOW good grammar, and they are too consumed with having fun to bother typing properly... that and it's fun to type in shortened speech... well, occasionally, if you are in a hurry.
For instance in MSN, or chat rooms, you replace good grammar with speed, and you get accustomed to typing that way.

if all you people hate all the poems on here because of spelling a grammar.. leave? umm i hate it when people talk like this- iii hat3rzz iit w3n ppplsss tak li3k thiis.. but i dont mind some simple spelling or grammatical errors. like how i dont capitalize my is or use (')s . this is a site where people can express themselves and get feedback. if they choose to want people to read their poems as grammatically incorrect, so be it. and if you dont want to read them.,. dont. ignore those poems.

It bothers me that your response (Sunny on 08/03) contains multiple spelling errors (grammar not grammer, enforce not inforce) and grammatical errors (you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make HIM drink -- them is plural, horse is singular), simple errors (its vs. it's).
I recognize that the moderators cannot be all things to all people. However, is it not possible to be attentive enough to spelling and grammar to at least provide a decent working model for your readers?
