Why does this site fail to enforce proper grammar?

But see, with one of my poems, for the artistic style, it's necessary to write strange. The poem's through the eyes of a guy writing a text message (The title's called '4 Txts Left'). Granted, someone up there said they blame mobile phones. I personally see nothing wrong with that, it's just that it's all about the change of times. In fact at the moment, I'm working a poem that's written entirely in 1337. See, it's all about appealing to the modern times. Sometimes the incorrect grammer is acceptable, no?

In your case, Mark, that would be fine... but it would also go into the "Internet Slang" category

e.e. cummings is famous for odd grammar. If grammar was enforced on this website, then it would be restricting freedom of speech and all that stuff blah blah blah. Don't complain. Give anyone who doesn't have good grammar ones if you want to.

    Top Sloth,
What does grammar have to do with being "honest and hardworking"? i really don't get it. besides, there are a lot really amazing poets on here, i personally don't care if they use proper english or not. it shouldn't matter HOW they write it, it should be the message, the meaning of the poem that really matters. And since this site is "hardly worth your time", why do u even care about how we write??

I agree with Shawte & dwelt.

And another thing is maybe some people dont have MS Word on their computer maybe just like wordpad that doesnt tell you if you made a mistake or not. I dont have MS Word, I just have Wordpad. [Someone posted that everyone has MS Word, well I dont.]

I try my best but you do have to know that some people were never really learned how to do grammar, I really dont even know. It's not my fault either because I'm somewhat a slow learner sometimes and our elementary school was horrible at teaching us, and they havent even taught us at Middle School what grammar was about.

So you do have to give some exceptions!!

And what is a poetic liscense?

okay, while its important to be grammatically correct and it tends to enable the reader to take the poem more seriously and comprehend it better, there's no need for anyone to get all uppity about it.

if you don't like the way a poem is set up
    don't read it.

  • IdTakeABulletForYou

    no
    i disagree wholeheartedly
    i mean
    i write with a lowercase i
it just is for me, it's how i live
this place, it's a place where i can be me
    without worrying about criticism
a place where i don't have to capitalize my i's
a place where i can say anything... well almost anything... without anyones jurisdiction
it's the one place where i am free
grammar doesn't matter when i'm free
so why enforce rules when it will only get me in trouble
for not capitalizing my i's lol!?

i agree. i never capitalize my i's unless kristen tells me too, in which i capItalIze all my I's in every word. xD

^^ lol, the only time i capitalize my i's iswhen i write a poem, but not when i comment poems, or if im just writing...

Hey Dawin. it seems you have been in basicly every thread that i have. and been opposing me in every one as well!

This website isn't for me to enter a contest or be given a grade. i come on here to write and to have fun. to do and talk aobut the things i love with those who share the same interest. if i wanted my poems to be ripped to shreads because of not capitalizing my i's or forgetting a comma. i would ask you to comment them.

i have my own reasons for not capitalising i's. if you want to know. i will tell you. it is not because i am lazy. in the beginning it was simply in my english classes. i had just started taking french; did you that in the english language we capitalize (i'm not sure of the exact amount) but like 20% more things than the french language (along with many others) do? that's why i stopped capitalizing my i's; then it simply became a habit.

The English Language is pure stupidity. if were causing it's downfall i say allelujah! i would rather speak french or german.

And i read, jsut so you know. i read approximately 5 books a week. and they're not some stupid teen books. one of my favorites(say what you will) is dean koontz. so i read real books. and i know proper english. i just don't like it. =]

If you hate it so much, why don't you just leave?
Obviously, Janis isn't doing anything about this.
You might as well just put up with it, the 14 year old American girls who typ lyk diz aren't your problem, so if you see a poem that is all

    I loved him
    but he left me
    lyk im blind nw
    so i cant see

    THEN JUST IGNORE IT.
    gosh.

    Darwin.. -thinks vulgar language-

You really need to get a life.

  • Sandra D

    holy snap darwin,
why are you so rude to everyone?? people should be able to write poetry without having you saying tht they're abusing the english language or something. if they feel like spelling something different, that's their choice!!! they should be able to write what they're feeling any way they want to! but jiz, you don't have to be so rude about it? you're critisizing people on they way they write, but u don't really read the words, do u? what, do u just look at the way it's written and think it's not good enough for you or something?

oh, and calling people lazy doesn't really mean anything anymore, it got old... sorry

Darwin there is no need for out right attacking someone personally. You can disagree with who ever you want, but do so with respect.

Beating people down, even with words, actually makes the person that is being calloused look like the fool instead of anyone else.

The truth is that we cannot change how others choose to portray their writings.

I also find it very hard to read and aggravating. When I see a poem written like that then I simply choose to move on and not read it.

The decision to read a poem is up to the reader and that is something that the reader can control.

It is always hard to accept new things that the younger generation brings with it. I remember growing up and all the things I done that my parents absolutley hated, but thankfully I grew out of that stage and started to appreciate the things that I rebelled against for so long.

As time passes these teenagers here will do the same thing and later in life when they look back on their young days they too shall shake their head and wonder "why".

    Have a blessed day

I like it. Just because there's a difference in opinion, Darwin displays a foul mouth. Shame on you. People are entitled to their opinion, just as you are yours.
If people cannot be bothered to use proper grammar, so be it. At least you can sleep in peace knowing you can write properly, Darwin.
You cannot make people change, I'd thought you would have known that of all people....

  • N J Thornton

Why waste your time here Darwin, because clearly nobody is listening to you. Why not find a site that DOES enforce proper grammar, and you may fit in there. But no, then there would be no one for you to insult in order to give you an ego - boost.
All you're doing is making a fool of yourself, and showing your immaturity by whining like a baby to people that don't give a rat's ***.
If people cannot use proper English then that shouldn't be your problem. I agree, schooling is a big reason for poor grammar, but you alone cannot change people's views especially by intimidation. So, I say again, leave us to rot with our grammatically incorrect poems, and find somewhere that does appreciate your overwhelming need for proper grammar.
