Why (do you think) are people so attracted to pain?

    Has anyone noticed this?
Just as an example; I've written a fair amount of poetry. And Sometimes I write these poems, when sparked by inspiration, that I'm just so satisfied and happy with. But it appears that people would still read the crappy poems I write when I'm in a bad mood or feel like complaining. It's not a big deal, I'm just curious. What do you guys think?

I think it's because people can relate to each others pain so much easier than they can relate to each others happiness.
Also, when people are sad or angry, they often go in search of something to console themselves with, i.e-Sad/angry Poetry and/or quotes.
It's just a thought.. but that's what I always considered it to be.

I think people are so attracted to pain because it's something that we all feel in one way or another and the one thing that most of us can relate to and really express.

Why are people so attracted to pain? ...that's a really good question.

"You bleed just to know you're alive" (Iris by Goo Goo Dolls)

... i completely believe in that. people often feel like their lives are out of control. they induce pain (physical) on themselves to prove that they are strong enough to endure it. donno if that makes sense lol, but that's why i believe that people are so attracted to pain.

    cheers

Negative emotions are usually stronger and deeper...I think. Between pain and happiness, which one affects you most? Anyway, I think that you can relate more to tears, blood, hurt, heartbreak, being forgotten... but when you read "I'm so happy, in love, I have a soulmate, etc," mostly one can just think "good for you."
    Oh well.
    Just my opinion.

because we all experience and sometimes (especially as a teenager) it's easier to understand and control...and some people never grow out of that.

and if you have, there's something to be said for nostalgia. no matter how bad, you still look back on your past, because it's a part of you. and you can never change that. but you can learn from and use it to grow.

Well I've always found that people tend to edge towards the dramatic. For one thing it is easyer to experiance sadness/depression than joy, which you have to work at.
Look at the news for example, always stories about people in acidents or wars, "human interest" stories naturally spark our sence of curiosity. It's a case of no news is good news.

I agree wit lovely bones, we all experience pain at least once. And when we see that someone has written about it, it makes us feel as though there is someone else out there who's in the same situation. Or, at least, a similar situation. Even though we all know that people are sad at one time or another, reading a poem about someone being sad makes it feel real. Feel normal. And when it comes to writing poems about pain, I think that when you're in a mood about something you can't talk to anyone about, it's easier to write a poem. At least in our poetry we know that wether or not anyone cares or wants to listen, we've told something. Even if it's scraps of paper on the corner of your homework. Some people dye their hair blue, some people shut themselves from society, and some read and write poetry about our pain.

And on another note, I have to go write a poem about something that just struck me as I was writing this response.... :-D

I read poems about pain because I find they are better written. I write about the emotional kind of pain, stuff that makes me so upset I break down and cry (Which is actually alot. I cried twice in one day on Mon) So....yeah

Read my pome 'Unwanted' it's an emotional pain one, about not getting to see my Dad often enough

K I'm sorry, but I totally disagree with you. I don't think that a subject of poetry can result in better writing. Maybe the amount of passion makes it better, but...what I'm trying to say is it's not sad poems are better written, it's better written poems are often sad.
And I really don't know why you would tell people to read your sad poem about your sad situation, or how often you cry. That really didn't have anything to do with your post, or so it seemed, so you should clarify, because it actually kind of annoyed me. I'm sorry.

I think people relate to pain, sadness, depression because life is not all perfect happiness. And it reassures us that others hurt also and that life is not all happiness and roses for everyone.Sure I like writing and reading happy poems, but realistically life is hardship, struggle and pain and it is reassuring to see that others feel the same as we do, whether positive or negative-it lets us know we are not alone in our despair, sadness, and pain.It is a connection to universal feelings.Though happy/love poems can be just as touching as those of pain.Though pain and sadness seem universal and we can all relate to these emotions.

I think it`s cuhs` everyone can relate to pain and sadness and all that stuff . I mean, we all experience happiness in our life, but some of us just haven`t experienced AS MUCH . But pain .. everyone can relate to that . Happy and Happy Ending Love Poems and stuff ... They can be just as good , but I don`t knoee ... I guess we just wanna read something that we can relate too -- While also reading other poems .

    ohkay think of hotchocolate

if you burn your tongue.. you will think about it and be carefuler next time...
if you dont burn your tounge.. you dont have anything to remember

some happy moments are always going to be remembered... like when you get married or something...

but then you really remember the painful moments and find a way to either make that pain go away, find the good in the pain. or take pleasure in the pain. there is so much more you are able to do with pain then happyness...

pain becomes addicting because it is what makes you realize you are alive. with out pain.. there would be no life... yes with out happyness you could be 'the living dead' but pain just brings more to you.
