What does God mean?

Lately I've met so many sad and depressed people with differing views about God. Some don't believe in such a being, others do but blame Him for everything. Personally, as a Christian, I believe that God does exist and that without my life would not be what it is. I could not be as happy and strong. To me God is not just an idea to 'keep me going,' He is real and alive and loving, and merciful, and gives His children strength. What do you think? Why do you or don't you have a realtionship with God.

he's the only father ive known. he keeps me going no matter how hard life gets , hes always there when you think ur so alone and no one can hear your thoughts and fears, he's not just my father, but savior and without him id be dead

I have a relationship with God. I believe that we all have a purpose here on earth. We all have our time to go. Those who don't believe in God, don't have a good explanation for us being here today. We didn't develope from apes, or the apes would still be forming into humans nowadays. We didn't just pop up from the earth, or there would still be humans forming from the earth. Nobody has an explanation, and it's because God created the earth. God created humans, plant, and animals. God really does help those who believe in a time of need. Everybody has their own opinion, but i myself am a follower of christ.

i have a question that i would really like answered..if God loves us all more than anything why would he allow us to go to hell? i mean would you ever send a loved one to hell? and also god is against all sin right? then why did he create sin? and also if god loves us so much why would he take away friends or family? yeah sure it could be a "test" of god or whatever but if you think "logicly" about it couldn't god not exsist and it was their choices that caused them to die i believe god is there but based on what ive seen is that god does not interfere with us on this earth and also the bible has and always will be misinterpreted

God is made up in your mind. A basic ''relief'' from what you know might happen.. something that you think will protect you. But in the end.. Fate will take it's toll, and God.. isn't going to make you mortal.

^Nope, i have been learning about evolution. I listened to my teacher last year, and i don't think it makes any sense. I was using the ape theory as an example...geeezz..sorry. I just wanted to make a point that i believe in God. I really have put a lot of thought into evolution, and it makes no sense to me.

um... I've noticed that everyone.. is kidna like.. "well you say this... but um.. NOPE! thats wrong! this is rite!" you guys.. no one can say that because no one has proof... so please just be humble about this whole thing...

um... anyhow... to me god is nothing. I wouldn't call my "god" a god... i jsut wouldn't lable him that... i was raised catholic... so now wenever i here the word God i think of some big man sitting on clouds in a white robe... and to me it seemed so selfish... making everyone Bow down to him... and sing and pray... and beg for forgivness... That is my opinion and i can't help it...It is how i feel... my family let me leave the catholic religion... and rite now I'm interested in Buddism.. especially Zen...

I do believe in a hier power.. because i just need to believe that there is someone listening to my prayers... and my hopes... and there someone listening to me when i cry... and some person some where that wants to hug me when i weep but there arms just can't reach... i need to believe that o keep going... and I'm still not sure who that person is.. But i have to believe that they no me...

And well that is wut god means to me...

Funny to see this thread... I've actually been thinking a lot about it... And personally, I'm very confused as to what I believe... I mean, I'm two-sided, I guess you could say...

On one side, I don't believe that there is a God, because if there was, He wouldn't allow such pain and hurt and stuff like that... and He wouldn't take the people that want to live and keep the people here that want to die...

But on the other side, I believe there is a God, because I couldn't possibly get through what I've been through without Him... And also if there's a God, then there has to be a devil.. which would explain the pain and suffering...

But then again, there's also that whole thing about if God really cared, why would He ALLOW it to happen? Yeah, free will, whatever... It just doesn't really all make sense... I'm just confused about it all...

I use to be a very religious person, but things change and I've began to rely on myself more. Does that mean I don't believe in God? No, I do believe in a way there's some higher force at work. But are they or it responsible for your bad fortune and sucky life. No, I believe we hold responsible for that.

God is love! God has eternal patience, waiting for you to come to Him. If you cannot remember that God loves you, you better write it down! Or one day you may find yourself..... then you are dragging your feet along. Keep in mind; how deeply God loves us....

Something like a boss. He micro-managed everything in the beginning, and that, like always, created a huge mess, so he's not been so hands-on in awhile. He lets us use our gift of free will now.

I don't not believe in God. I don't really as you might say confide in or worship him either though. For me it's all about this unifying energy and force that isn't as complicated as it may seem.

I think god is something that people made so people can have faith and have reasons. Like how was the universe created? or what happens after death? People hate not knowing answers so they made one up. People beleive in faith and that's what I think God is; faith.

Me, myself, no. I don't beleive in god. Somewhere out there, there is a higher power, but I don't beleive in an all and might powerful god. I don't think "anyone" crated the universe. I don't beleive that things happen for certian reasons. Things happen just becasue that's how it goes. After you die, you're nothing; you're gone; dead. Kind of a shity way to look at it but that's my veiw on it.

yeah ms. but if he loves us so much how can allow his "children" to be put through eternal suffering? it makes no sense? would you put your children or friends or loved ones into eternal suffering just for not believing you exsist or questioning what you say? if they didn't bow down and worship you? sorry for being so rash but i'm kinda in a bad mood today but then you also think well he gave us free will right? would you give your loved ones the will to send them selves to eternal damnation? so if god loves everyone he must really not care about the ones he loves

I've just been on vacation for a while, but I'm back up there.

Why develop the 7 sins, why worship god? No one can not have commited any of these sins...everyones hands are dirty.
and "god" obviously has no punishments for that.
So why beleive at all?

God does not 'allow' eternal suffering. In fact, suffering isn't eternal. Because life isn't eternal. Life is suffering, because our free will and nature, and the enviroment we live in all have a part in making this world not exactly perfect.

Now, to wrap our heads around this idea that we live in an 'imperfect' world, the 'creation myth' was invented. and explained that at one time, we had paradise in Eden, and we knew not sin. but our ancestors screwed that over for us and now we live in this world with sickness and draught.

My problem with viewing things that way seems to cheapen the miracle of life on Earth. and gives the impression that there's something 'better' out there. the 'grass is always greener...' which of course creates a dissatisfied feeling.

And without those hurricances, and natural disasters, and illness, and death, there would be no balance. And in fact increase the amount of destruction and plague. So perhaps this is TRULY the best of worlds. Astronomers continuously seem to prove so.

There are also ways we can control our enviroment too (we have free will, let's use it!). to some extent. the thing with control, even if you have complete control, you never have complete control. that made sense when I said it.

How do you explain evolution? I just really want to know how people who beleive so much in god and the idea of adam and eve can ignore a proven scientific fact so that they can beleive some legend.

Evolution is proof that there is a higher power determining the course of life and nature.

Genesis (like other previous Greek legends) are parabols to explain trends in behavior. I too have a hard time taking every word of the Bible literally at its word. But I have the same problem with history books.

There's no excuse for causing harm to others. or selfishness. and it creates bad karma on earth. I don't know if it carries over into the 'next life.' though, yeah, I find it rather sad to say that if you commit suicide or are homosexual, you're going to hell. I mean, it's not like that person has much of a choice. yes, they chose to act on it, but in certain situations, that's not the same thing.

But then, maybe Hell doesn't exist. Judaism doesn't believe in Hell. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences though.

Judaism actually DOES beleive in hell...do a little research...maybe go to a temple instead of making assumptions.

sorry for the lack of political correctness...perhaps I should have emphasised that most Jews I know, non-rabbis, some not even really practicing, others very devout, others converted to Christianity, some Christians who became Jewish.., have all said that Judaism believes that a focus on avoiding sin rather than simply doing good, is no way to teach gospel. whether they 'believe' hell exists is entirely personal and vague...and seems a lot like the not-so-unified belief some Presbyterians have in predestination. even though the Presbyterian faith is 'defined' by it...by some people.

Yeah, religion is...needlessy complicated. But this thread is about God. Religion is merely secondary.

without war, disease, even murderes...we would all be living in each other pockets, with no food.

people dying is a sad thing but just think if they didnt die there would be no room for them as well as you.

^ Totally agree. If you don't follow God than he will send you to hell no matter how nice you are or how much you gave to others. God wants to be apart of your life and if you dont take the chance, and go against His word, he has no choice.

I' am an Epicopalian, I belive(misspelled) iin God. I think htat god Gives us obstacles so that we can become stronger when we overcome them. I know alot of people don't believe In him, but i do, deep in my heart. But i do have Doubt tho. just like everyone else. but i know in the end h'ee be there for me. Everything happens for a reason. I sound like a peacherLOL. any way that what i believe, and i am stickin to itlol
