^ No, it's not just a music label. I disagree. Geezz..you people take hings to heart way too much.

  • HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG

I didn't take it to heart. I'm just sick of hearing it as a label for people. Yes, it is a music label. That's where it was originated from and that is what it is.

    -Jenna.

  • ღ*KiM*ღ

^^ It originated in the 1980's. Not because of music, I may add.

  • HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG

    1. Emo

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

^^ based off of a music label.

    -Jenna.

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

    it's a gd music label.

and YES IT DID originate in the 80s BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC, kim. Because of the music and fashion styles that developed around the indie music scene. If you think differently, give proof to back up your vague generalizations.

im not arguing this. this thread has already been argued a million times. if you don't know what emo is by now, you've been living under rock for the last 3 years.

  • ABrookeD

I really don't care. I'm not into emo so doesn't matter to me. All i know is that it's a genre of music. Emo= emotional. People stand for emo, therefore it's not just a music label, but a way of life that people consider a "style". I'm sick of these stupid topics. Everyone argues about it....

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

yeah, I'm not a big fan of the 'fashion' being a factor either. but I know it is...

am emo is some-one who slits there wrists, weres fur, is a mixture between a goth and i punk! (haven't you ever heard of

'I wish me grass was emo, so then it would cut itself'

A goth, hmm there are certain types of goths and you can be a half goth or a full goth. Goths are meant to wear dark/black clothes..be depressed well not depressed but not really loud! Rarely smile, some-times they cut themselves but goths unlike emo's are meant to carve into their skin (can't remeber coz there is too different things)

  • HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG

Not all "emos" slit their wrists...

Original poster, this thread is just going to go back and forth. Just search it in on google. That will give you more information there.

"and YES IT DID originate in the 80s BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC, kim. Because of the music and fashion styles"

Yeah. FASHION styles. This topic needs to be locked before it gets out of hand. It's been discussed over WAY too many times before.

fashion styles that came out of the music scene...

    LOCK THIS!

  • Emily

This is going to be quite a popular post.

Emo is someone who acts depressed because it's a trend. If you say you're an emo, I will laugh in your face, and spit on you. It is also a genre of music, in which I don't mind. I like when music has emotions, but when you're a little crybaby because you can't get your hair to flip the right way. . .

    Yeah, emo.

  • HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG

If they admit to being a pathetic label, than they are scene. I agree, please lock this!

why do you want this locking?

  • HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG

Because, this subject arises way too much conflict. And there are like ten other posts that ask the same question in here.

  • ALEX

Not all "emo" people cut themselves.
And not all people who cut themselves are "emo".

These two things are often wrongly associated with each other because sliting your wrist is a common form of suicide attempts.

    HOWEVER

Just because you cut does not mean you plan to kill yourself.

People don't always cut their wrists either. Those who do may very likely be poseurs and/or fakes looking for attention.

emo is a part of hardcore and punkmusic. Little Part of the hardcore movement. But there is no political intention to it like hardore or punk. Just depression and they wallow in self pity.

  • Cherri

depends, because now emo is a style, and goth is a style of church architecture. lol i hate the way people made goth, like the Italian gothic churchs and french churches, their style of architecture is called goth. Every one thinks it is just a style of clothing. but emo is labeled as someone who cuts and is depressed, but the style is like short black hair, in the face and depressing.

Jez.... people the origional question was 'Whats and Emo?'
    The Defintion of Emo is
Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven Hardcore punk") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. ...

That is the Correct answer for this question.

^^^^^i also agree with Parker, Not all emo's cut and not all cutter are emo!
Im a cutter and im as far from emo as you get! Im a total Hippy!

An Emo is an emotional Goth, isn't it?
Because Goth's "don't feel" but Emo's "fell too much."
    Or somethinglike that.

I think people who think they are 'emo' Just want attention. No offence or anything but the kids in my school. The girls mostly, all look the same. So when someone is speaking of someone else. I look at them and am like 'Oh a clone? Another one?" My best friend Josh wanted to fit in with all the 'emo's' and I just laughed. He dyed his hair pink black and blonde. When I first seen it I almost died in a fit of laughter. They still didn't appect him, no matter how tight his jeans were. I told him, " You need to be skinny, and tiny to fit in Josh and you aren't that. Stick with your real friends, not the fake people with a ton of makeup and werid hair' Now he knows after being hurt by the same people. True friends aren't trying to fit in with the 'emo' crowd. And we are tighter then ever.

Two of my favorite jokes distinguishing 'Emo' from 'Goth'.

Emo: Like a Goth only a lot less death and a lot more Harry Potter.

    or

Behind every emo kid trying to start a fight, there's a goth kid behind the jocks and the punks going, "Knock him the @#$% out!"

Ok i didn't read everything but i do want to say somthing on this subject....

I like the color black, actually its my favorite color, i like dark rooms, and perfer night to daylight, and i used to self harm (aka cut).......according to this i am emo......here is the rest of me...i love writeing poetry, i am interested in music, i play drums, and flute i am in the marchingband,...according to this i am a band fag.....I dont like school and i have short hair thats not black but my natural brown, i sti alone many times, i dont talk to alot of people, i have my bad days, and i always wear some form of black....according to this i am goth....

Why do people have to lable others? Emo orginated from music and fashion....its jsut like any other lable...only its looked down upon...if you call some one a prep or popular, then its the same thing as calling some one emo or goth....

but i do have to agree that if you call a goth emo you will probably get your ass kicked.....i am personally neither, i am me..i dont liek lables...i get called everything from band fag, to emo, to goth, to punk, to prep, to poser. But really i am jsut me....why do we insist on labeling people?

~*just a note on goth...black is often osciated (sp sorry) with goth but orginally goths wore all white. people think of being goth as being depressed, and with drawn, and black loving...when really its just a bunch of people who have similar interests, and like the color black...plus a goth is probably one of the most accepting groups there is, they acept you as who you are...orginaly that was the point...being your self and being accepted.*~

Cool, cool. i'm having trouble taking researched information on a topic with no definite answer seriously. or a word that isn't even recognized by Webster's. yeah, sure, this thread should be locked, sure, I asked for it to be locked, over a year ago when it was originally posted. but since people apparently can't stop talking about it. why not give them what they want?

So, who in here actually likes 'emo'?

Everyone has their own definaition....i guess me and my friends think of it ass cutters and people who are just sad and put their hair over one eye...i mean i'm a cutter and i make fun of it. i don't take it personally...
