What's an emo?

Eh that is true. But I think myself as emo and I never cut. I hate that the most about being emo. Everyone thinks you cut yourself. And lol not all emo's put their hair over one eye. Some just have weird hair styles and different dyes in their hair.

Lol if you want to leave it don't answer? Many people have there own thinking on what an emo is

The whole cutting thing is kind of a misnomer, but I guess it comes from people's perceptions of it. I know a few 'emo' kids who've been like "Omg! I cut myself!" and other people who aren't 'emo' in the slightest who do the same. And others who aren't or are, but aren't as open about it. So I tend to think emo and cutting are two seperate things. Though since violence is so prevalent in emotive hardcore videos and lyrics, that could be where people associate the two. My brother doesn't have the same prejudice about emo =/= cutter. He just sees the goth'punk'ish clothes hairstyles, elvis costello glasses, and elitism.

He has a little bit of a prejudice about cutters though. When I first mentioned the emo 'cutter' stereotype to him, first there was a blank stare, followed by, "Oh, you mean like 13 year old girls, 'oh my god, I can't believe he broke up with me, I have to cut myself..." It was funny when he did it. Funny, but wrong. Very wrong.

"So I tend to think emo and cutting are two seperate things"

They are two seperate things, VERY seperate. Not all scene kids or "emos" if you must call them that, cut themselves. The happiest person you know may cut themselves and what's even scarier is how common cutting HAS become these days. It seems almost like a natural response in young people to pick up a blade when they feel any smidgen of pain. But, again, not all people that seem the most depressed cut themselves, and the happiest person you know MAY cut themselves. There is NO group to categorize cutters in because they come from many different groups.

Well this isn't a cutting thread, this is an emo thread, i didn't go into a lot of detail on that because i wanted to respect the thread already created for cutting.

and there are no established facts for an emo. there can't be. because it's not a real word. all we can do, seem to want to do, is sit around and type out our opinions. share stories, experiences. maybe we'll come to a definition of our own.

  • The Sky is Falling

Everyone does bring up their own definition of their own. I'm emo. So? I don't see me different from anyone else. I don't cut. I supposly seee things different from other people. With more emotion then another person shows. That's just me.

"Emo" is a stupid label that should die! i really have no idea what it the hell it means. so for the sake of those who don't label and judge people, stop using it!

    Labels are dumb.

Hey, look at me. I'm a turgus. Yeah, that's right. Try and label me.

[emo] is a type of music. =)
people [may] have heard that kind of music.
those people that have heard, probably have felt the [emotion] in the music.
those people have probably seen other people act/react the way the lyrics have played in their mind.
so people apply the word to the actions of people.
therefore, "you are so emo". =)

I would have to say EMO is a state of mind it stands for emotional, and everyones emotional, but not everyones EMO, theres a big difference

  • Emma

Everyone around where i live, define an EMO as a depressed wannabe, wearing extra tight clothing, black hair covering the majority of their face and eyes and oh yea dont forget the slitting of the wrists! i absoluetely HATE it when people define that as being EMO! i know people who self harm because of home problems, mental illness and because they cant deal with normal life, but are branded as EMO which is just not right!! i hate the term EMO it is just stupid!

    - dear emma
would you be kind enough to replace the word 'emo' with ANOTHER stereotype? get over it, letting it get to you is a sign of weakness, just don't give a fook. seriously. it's not going away, and as long as there are the, not those, because apparently that's judgmental, THE people, with those clothes and hair, there will be the word 'emo' and all you'll think of is them. Nobody thinks emo, music genre, anymore, and you can't change that by merely stating you hate it. Save your effort for something worth letting get at you, sometimes people just need to breathe out and classify a whole group of people as one thing, it shouldn't effect you. It means nothing, so let it mean nothing.

    My definition of 'EMO'?

Sadistic children who listen to 'I WANT TO DIE' music and read and write poems about being suicidal in the 'moonlight' and tend to use the word 'crimson' in every piece they write.

But that's just MY definition, anyway.

  • Sydney

Everyone has all of these definitions that are quite entertaining if I may add. Pft. I have emo friends. Im considered emo by peoples perspective. I love Hawthorne Heights who are considered emo. Hmm. Does anyone actually have a problem with emos? I sure as hell dont. (hehe i think most are kind of hawt anyway) Its like putting people into alcholocis and druggies. Its just a catagorey to put people in.

^ Actually the correct Spanish word is problama not problemo. But that's just me being OCD to have to point that out, lol.

Lmao! Well I'm glad everyone isn't fighting over a stupid term people call themselves =x

  • FindingGestalt

I totally agree with you people who say that emos don't necessarily cut, cutting doesn't mean your emo, cutting means your depressed, wether or not you have the 'look' to go with it. Or it means your a drama queen/king and you really need to have a reality check cause cutting isn't just something to get attention, its serious, I've been there myself, and it ain't a pretty situiation.

  • The Sky is Falling

No no it isn't. I try to tell people that all the time. That 'emos' don't all cut themselves. Normal people could cut themselves. The top guy on the football team or even the head cheerleader. It doesn't matter if your different, everyone is around the same and they all can have the same problems.

  • omgitsmina

^ Yeah. People take one look at you and they automatically think that they know who you are. It's really annoying.

What I've noticed recently is that, older people are more jugemental than younger people. That's probably because people even 20 years ago weren't as understanding as people are now.

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

No, young people make judgements all the time, that's why 'shallow judgements' are often regarded as immature, whether the person making them is older or younger.

The reason older folks appear more -judgemental- is because when you get older, you think everybody younger than you is an idiot -- if only because you remember that you were an idiot back then too. With a few glaring exceptions.

Emo originated as a music genre ok we all know that by now BUT it has now turned into a lifestyle for some, like its evolved into so much more than music! so everyone who keeps telling people that its a music genre and thats it are wrong! emo is much more than music now.

  • Yourmyangel

I think emo is just something that people like to call other poeple that are different so they can feel bad some more..i think emo and goth are kinda the same thing..but i hate how people always asume if your emo you cut and think about suicide its soo stupid..
