It doesn't happen with friends... ever.

i sometimes and not always backbites one of my friend. and the only reason is that i don't want the other to notice that i like him much much more than them. also i only say small words just to hide my true feeling towards him in front the other.

If it's a she, she has an excuse. Girls are mean and bitchy and will do anything to raise their popular grade. Whether guys, they could be showing off, or going along with their friends. I would say talk to him/her and see what's actually going on.
