Life! My life as a kid wasn't happy and im sure many will testify to some of what i went through growing up with an abusive alcoholic Army father!

5yrs old, that was me, 7yrs old that was my brother, innocent kids at least we thought we were until one night our dad came home from the pub in a drunken violent rage. he walked in the door ( i swear to the day i die that i will never forget this), he started hitting my mum, beating her and cursing her for bringing 3 little bastards into this world that he didnt want. I say three because i have a sister younger). Well after he had finished using my mum as a punch bag he came into our room, me and my brother, he yelled at us to wake up, we were terrified of course and pretended to be asleep so he tipped our beds up and it landed on us, he lifted it off us and then began to violently beat us blaming us for his problems and woes, everyday from that day until i was 15 he used to beat the living daylights out of us with his hands and other objects. Ironically he never laid a finger on our sister!

What did i learn? Beating someone just because you have problems isn't going to solve them no matter what. Beating defenceless people doesnt make you more of a man but more of a coward, i am now in my 30's but i still have nightmares about the very first time he almost beat us to death.

I learned that you can`t ever take life for granted, and that we need to do all we can to make a difference in the lives of the children we meet along the way,

my experience is similar to Bobs,I worked in a shelter where children in trouble with the law would be held until a placement could be found for them,I met a little spanish boy named Danny,he was the greatest and most annoying kid you could ever meet, I truly loved the little guy, He was sent to live with his father and about two weeks later was killed by a gang member . I was devastated and wondered if I could have done something ,maybe I should have taken him in. It changed me,I now deal with the kids I work with as if I could lose them tomorrow, because you never know!
