I dont think they have too much in common. Songs are spoken with words and poems are spoken with pens.. song writing isnt very deep but poems give you a look into someones heart and how they feel, songs can too but not as deep. But both songs and poems almost always deal with some type of emotion or feeling. Finally, I think its a whole a lot harder to write poetry than write songs. |

writing a song is writing a poem and putting a beat to it. |

all songwriting is poetry (or at least should be- gwen stafani and britney spears are not poets) but not all poetry is songwriting. folk music, good rock, some rap, and the occasional pop song will display a very poetic writer, but songwritng also includes a melody, a beat, and distinct sections (chorus, verse, bridge, intro). if you write a poem, call it a song, and have never taken a musical intrument in your life, then you are deceving yourself. |

I think that poem is partially of songwriting, except that poems seems to show more expression toward others.. well that was my opinion |

rap is more of angerness being expressed, poems is just deep feeling but being calm expressed.. that is my opinion |

I think it is, poetry is a form of songwirting. In both you express your opinion and let your feelings out. For every state of mind there is a poem and a song that a person can relate to. |

I think it sort of has the same technique, yet when you write a song it has to 'sound' good and have at least a little structure to it, while it's not required for poetry. So there are some suttle differences. |

I definitely think that songwriting is a form of poetry and a very poignant one because putting music to poetry is as difficult as creating an ambience in a poem. |
