I don't anything about poetry either. I have no clue about meter, pentameter, and so forth. My advice is just search info on the topics you need help on. That's what I try and do when trying new poetry forms.

You don't really need to know much about poetry to write about poetry. Just make sure to use punctuation and to spell everything right as a first off. You also want to find a bit of rhythm in there, or it's a bit pointless and just does not work. You should check out all the articles about writing poetry, just to give you some clue.

you dont have to know much about poetry to write it, poetry is one's own thoughts and feelings poured into words on paper, it can rhyme or it doesnt have to. but all you need to know is how to spell, read, and write and you can be a poet. you might not be the best but you can write poetry all the same.

    Okay, that's not all.
I suppose you don't have to know much about poetry to come up with a basic little poem. On the other hand in order to write poetry in different forms, one would have to understand the rules for that particular form. If you are interested in educating yourself about poetry, there are many resources on the topic. Go to the library or search on the internet, you'll find more than you want to know.

yes... I agree that you don't have to know those pentameter, the forms of poetry, etc. I don't know much either. And writers in the past generation wrote poetry w/o studying it. Feelings, thought, rythym and rhyme just blended perfectly and sounds good in the ears of a listener...that's why lot of writers use it!

You don't exactly need to know about petry. As long as you have an imagination, and you have to know how to feel. You can write. But the ryhming part, is you just have a good vocabulary, and know how to ryhme. Or just read some good poems and look at the ryhming schemes. Hopefully it helps!

    Greetings,
Not sure if this will help (there are so many topics on individual topics posted elsewhere, but I believe this is the most broad and inclusive) it's quite lengthy but it covers a variety of topics and has input from many P&Q members. It is not meant to tell you how to write, but to be a place of reference/help/advice to others-a place where many of the questions put forth repeatedly in these forumns is addressed, mainly to offer suggestions on writer's block (tips/exercises to break it. Inspiration, ideas, etc.), exercises to spur creativity (whether form, style, type of poem, content, etc.-just some stuff to try when blocked or to try something different), various poetic terms/definitions, a variety of basic stuff and technical stuff, submissions and poetry markets (where/how to submit your work). So hopefully there is something here for everyone. Worth sifting through(I hope). I would also appreciate any comments/additions-whether opinions or advice (personal or technical), poetic definitions, exercises, your own personal writing habits, etc.

I agree that you need to write about feelings, poetry is not about form it is about emotions. If you can get your joy or sadness or whatever else you are feeling across in your poem then you are doing what it is meant to do. Poetry is pure emotion, pure raw emotion. Do not fret on the form or what you do not know...there is no reason. Poetry is art, and art is life. It controls you, you cannot control it. Another thing...one cannot write a good or bad poem. Everyone has different opinions on everything therefor nothing can be good or bad in the sense of art. I believe that if you like it, then you wrote a good poem. It is not necessary to know much about poetry to write it. You must just...feel it.
