When I read it couldn't be displayed because it is gang colors I was amazed. I thought only us Americans where that crazy. If the flag of the country offends you, you must live in the wrong country.

I'm sorry it happened and outraged, despite not being Australian.

ORGANISERS of the Big Day Out rock festival yesterday dropped their ban on the Australian flag in the face of a united political push led by John Howard.

Faced with a withering assault from state and federal politicians, event management issued a statement insisting founder Ken West had been misrepresented and was only "encouraging" people not to bring flags to Thursday's Sydney leg for safety reasons.

However, as the organisers back-pedalled, one Australian act on the Big Day Out bill and many fans reported concerns about an outbreak of flag-waving hooliganism at the 2006 Sydney Big Day Out held soon after the Cronulla riots.

One group of men was reported to have marched around the event demanding people kiss the flag or be punched in the face.

Callers to youth radio network Triple J were divided on the issue yesterday, with some supporting a ban and many saying such a move would make the flag the sole preserve of the red-neck rump.

In a statement, the Big Day Out organisers said: "In recent times, there has been an increased incidence of flags brandished inconsiderately and this has led to increased tension. Our only goal in discouraging this activity at the Big Day Out is to ensure that our patrons are not subjected to or inconvenienced by this behaviour.

"We have no problem with people being patriotic, and we certainly do not have a problem with people wearing or displaying what they feel is important. This is about audience safety and enjoyment.

"Organisers would like to request that fans please leave large flags at home."

Mr Howard, however, would not let the issue go.

"The proposition that the display of the Australian flag should ever be banned anywhere in Australia is offensive and it will be to millions of Australians," he said.

"The reason given at the time was quite unacceptable. They're running their own political agenda, but because of public pressure they're now backing down."

NSW Premier Morris Iemma was quick to condemn the idea of a ban.

"It's an insult to all Australians and they ought to withdraw it immediately," he said. "People will ignore this ban. You can't stop people from showing pride in their country in this way. "

Shannon Kennedy - aka Ozi Batla, from popular local act The Herd - said he was disturbed to see a huge increase in the number of Australian flags at last year's Sydney event, held after the Cronulla riots.

"Obviously you can't ban the flag," Kennedy said. "However, it was a worry to see the flag being misused by violent hoods last year and if these politicians could see the behaviour of some of these people wrapped in Australian flags they'd be disgusted and ashamed.

"There was a bunch of guys forcing people to kiss the flag and behaving violently toward people that didn't."

All publicity is good publicity. Ask Jade Goody. ;-)

Although one must questions why you'd want to wave a national flag at a rock concert. Lighters are much more traditional.

These events should be a safe environment for all to enjoy regardless of your nationality.

Wow I'll nominate that statement for the PC mouth shit of the decade.

I love it how a culture the in present in the founding of a nation and a culture that the majority of the nation share has to take a back seat to "other nationalities". Appearntly it's become a crime in many western nations to celebrate western culture or the culture of that nation because "some one might feel discriminated agianst, unsafe, left out, or let out a slight whimper"

Why should a holiday that was created for Aussies and Aussie culture have to worry about offending other "cultures" within Australia. Oh and yes I'm aware of the argument well "modern Australian culter is a mix of many blh blha blha" Thats bull. Thats an argument from the PC folks that wannna make people believe that all cultures should have equal value in a nation except ofcourse the evil western culture. Thats bull a nation is more than lines on a map. If you live in a country and consider your self a citizen of that nation then you adopt the culture of your homeland NOT the other way around. It happens to much in the US and I'm sorry to hear it's happening there too. But it's the same story throughout the west isn't it. The west creates one of the most prosperous advanced and moral(i know what morality the west is evil right right) the history has ever known then suddenly we're just supposed to turn it over to the rest of the world because hey you can't leave anybody out. Gota love The 21 century
