does he like me or is he just playin mind games?

Me n this guy have been friends for a year now not n I've always thought he was cute but recently I started getting feelings for him. And one night we were tex messageing eachother and I told him "what if I told you I hella like you " and he didn't respond to me , and I seen him at school and stuff and he goes that extra length to try and make me notice he's around and he's been trying to hold my hand n stuff but I'm not sure if he's just ..messing with my head because he knows or if he likes me . I don't know because he hasn't responded to that with any words what so ever .

just talk to him about it face to face not on the phone.

It depends on the guy. If he isn't known as one of those screwed up perverts then he most likely likes you. You never know these things for sure untill you get him to admit it. You can only be 99% positive. But saying you know this guy really well, and he tries to hold your hand...I would think he does.

I asked him about it yesterday and he just sat there smiling and then I asked if he was going to say anything and he just sit there still so I felt embrassed and left.
