Soldiers

Ok...today I read a poem that made me want to write a poem about a soldier going off to war. There is a woman in my office whose son is in the military right now over seas. So I kind of started writing it about her and her son. I want to know if this is a good start.....

Please let me know what you think.....

    Straight out of high school
    He signed up for war
His mother screams, begs and pleads
Dad’s not around, but if he were, he’d say, “Go get 'em son”

It’s time to leave, get on the bus
    Say good-bye
Wipe the tears from your mother’s eyes
Look up to the sky, let dad know you’ll make him proud

Today is the day, time to fight
Think of your mother and sister
The little girl next door and the teachers you so dearly love
It’s for them and more that you’re here to fight

    Well, now it’s time
    Grab your gun
    Get in the field
Don’t you dare, show an ounce of fear

Bob, I love that poem and I actually left you a comment on it a while back. There's so many different things to write and from different perspectives, I just didn't know where to go. But I just started writing and that's what came out. I would like to finish....I'm going to try in the next few days. Thank you very much for taking the time to tell me what you thought and to share yours with me and who ever else reads this.

    Coming Home
    A Vietnam Dedication

I am not from that generation
I did not fight along side of anyone
But I have heard the stories
    The horrendous stories
Of what we did to “Our Boys”
    When they came home

Instead of the parades and ribbons
    The public cheering
    People protesting disgraced them
And never took the time to understand
    They threw tomatoes
    And swore
But the didn’t experience the violence
    On the Vietnam shore

    So I ask myself why
How could anyone hate “Our Boys”
The ones that didn’t want to go
But had to by their choice
The ones that saw right and left
    Their friends and comrades fall
How could we possibly disgrace them
When they came home standing tall

I talked to a veteran the other day
    He said he cant understand
The way that this country treats our troops
The way they protest for no real cause
He remembered the way when he came home
The streets all lined with streamers
He saw people he didn’t know
But was happy just to see them

He told me still he wakes up at night
Screaming and dreaming of the Germans
He cant get the visions from his head
And he cant erase the faces he killed
He lost his brother in Germany
    He misses him each day
So this is why I’m begging you
To stand by our troops today

How is it that we all can judge?
    And not even know
    Why someone joined the forces
    The reasons that they go
    Maybe they wanted to
    Maybe they couldn’t afford college
But the fact of the matter truly is
We have no right to judge their decisions
We have no right to treat them like dirt
We have no right to protest them coming home
    We need to celebrate them
We need to give them a Coming Home Parade
And not treat them like we did the Vietnam vets.
