Asking Male friend to Prom?

I have a crush on this male friend of mine. He knows it and when he told me a couple of days ago he wasn't interested he was so nice about it and it didn't ruin anything in our friendship. I went to this school last year and missed out on my prom but this year in this new school I really would want to go seeing as how I actually did look forward to this for a while. I'm not dating and most of my guy friends are too immature or far away to come. My friend suggested I'd ask our guy friend whom I'm close to and is also my crush. She said he'd do it if I asked but I'm really shy seeing as how I never asked someone out before. I want to let him know that it would be as a friends. I'd wait long to ask but it's next month and if he does say yes I'd need that time to get things ready and if he says no then to try and convince another friend. Any tips to help me?

heh... sometimes it works to be really blunt about it: Hey, ____, I know you're not interested in a relationship right now, so... do you want to go to the prom with me.. as friends?

haha, or maybe that would be really odd. when i asked a guy, it went like this:
Me: So.. I have a question. Would you want to go to the prom?
Him: ...Yes, I'd like that.
Me: I mean... would you want to go with ME?
Him: haha, yes, I'd like to go with you.
Me: So.. you wouldn't just LIKE to, but WILL you go to prom with me?
Him: I'd love that.

good thing he's more secure than I am, lol

it's always good to threaten them.
like really get it in their head that if they have any OUNCE of rejection in their tone of voice you will literally deform their face.
