Why do you write poetry?

I just want to know why you write poetry. I write it to release anger, emotions, or for the comments and ratings. They make me feel good and inspires me to write better.

I don`t understand why people don`t stick to what the thread ask. I write poetry for a lot of different reasons,To express what I`m feeling inside,to share feelings about different subjects with anyone who wants to read them, sometimes if I`m sad its a way to vent, like talking to an invisible friend. Its a great outlet.

'I don`t understand why people don`t stick to what the thread ask.'

    Cough cough hypocrisy.
    Hahaha, I love win/win situations.

People don't stick to what the thread want's because (my opinion) they say something that other people have to say something about and then it turns into a argument. But to answer Deana, that is one of the reasons I write too. I'm starting a new thread though called Let's Talk, feel free to come join that thread (I'll still be viewing and posting on this thread.

I write poetry to express myself when I feel I am unheard.

I agree, that's one of the things I also do. I try to try new forms of poetry, but some have bad results, but I try to improve on them. Recently I updated all my poems and ever since I've been getting better responses and ratings. For example my Returning to the Fire poem has gone for 4.8 to 4.9 the poem is the only one that isn't a 5.0 and even though 1.0 added isn't much, it is a better rating and proves how improving my writing helps.

    (I hope this makes sense)

I write poetry because its the one way to relase anger and frustration. Its my way of showing the world the true me without showing them my soul or the reasons behind my anger

My favorite response to this question is:
    Because I cannot NOT write.
Writing has always been a form of self therapy, an expression of emotions too intense to keep inside, an expression of thoughts, feelings, meanings. Sometimes it is simply purging-a cleansing, sometimes I learn something about myself or others or life in general. Sometimes it is merely the noble expression of art. Also for the fun and freedom of it. Mainly it was something that was mine. A release, a passion, a peace.
I look back over my poems and am reminded of things I'd learned but forgotten, how I felt at certain times, etc.
Sometimes I can see who I was then, who I am now, and perhaps a hint of where I'm going.
And though I write mainly for myself (it's helped keep my sanity many times, lol) and always have (though some pieces are distinctly for others-and I have found sometimes the more personal you are sometimes the more universal the piece is striking a chord in others). It is a great writer, and sometimes the goal of the writer, to touch the hearts and minds of others.
There are many reasons. As you write, and each piece, sometimes the reasons and the poems change over time. Sometimes not.

    Peace, Poetry & Power,
    Gary Jurechka

P.S.- not complaining or aiming this at anyone specific, but this same question/thread has been posted numerous times, this happens a lot (not just this topic either), it'd be better if people kept all the posts/threads in one thread rather than rehashing.

I basically have the same reasons for why I write poetry as you.
To let out emotions and to let go of my wild side that no one knows XD

  • Startle Me

I write it because I'm good at it.
    I like telling stories.
I've got plenty on my mind and not a lot
Of people want to hear it.
That's why I like poetry and write it.

I write as a way to vent, its why the majority of my poems are sad and depressing. They see me at my worst. Its kind of funny because im not really that sad and depressed of a person...i dont think...*sigh* well you'd have to read all my like 100 poems to understand it really lol but in the end everytime i tried to write a happy or lovey-like poem it just didnt work out *shrugs* im not sure why but thank god for poetry ^_^
