A poem isn't a poem if there isn't yorself in there. There HAS to be a reference, even if it is only a small bit, but you have to be in there..

Well you can write about other things or other people-which is good for inspiration but it will be YOUR interpretation.

I completely disagree. Since when, in any definition in the entire world, did you have to be in your poem?! You are shunning a lot of famous and excellent poetry as non-poetry.

what is the difference between writing your poems and being in your poems?

  • Daisy if you do

I suppose the reference of you in your poem would be the thoughts that you project into the words you choose. So whatever metaphorically speaking there is a piece of us in all the poetry we write, because it's our view.

I go into the third person a lot, but often the characters I use are just like me.

I think most of you are making to much of it.. Weither you put your self in or not does not matter as long as you get your point acrossed... I mostly talk about me so i put myself in it but sometimes i worry about what people think and i say she or the girl.. Tuly it doesnt matter weither or not your in it you should write what ever you feel...

    Poems are almost like stories.
there's a beginning and an end.
some are mind blowing and some are baffling.
there are a million different types
and they dont always have the same plot or characters :)

I think if it has you in it the poem is more powerful however sometimes we write about things which do not refer to people so cant have people in the poem?

I don't think it has to be. I mean, some people just write about random topics but manage to make it seem like its something they been through themselves. But I guess other people like personal experiences and things like that.

Yes, I do sometimes, but not always. Some of my best poems, are just made up, with a touch of my own opinion.

I put my heart and soul into my poems so yeah, I guess that's me in there, It was my thought that went into them and my efforts that made them what they are so yeah, I'm in mine and I'm sure it's the same with everyone else!

I don`t feel that I have to be part of the subject matter of the poem,I sometimes write as if I am someone else, trying to write what I think they feel.
Of course in one sense you are always writing from your own mind and heart so a little piece of yourself is always present.

You don't have to be in all of your poems. I may be a little concern if you weren't in some of them. But sometimes I speak in the third person depending on the situation as a psychological thing.

You may not want it to be you so you change it up a little. But yeah... no you don't have to be in all of them.

Using yourself as a character is easier because you can trace your own thoughts to understand your character's thoughts. However, over time there's little variation. If you participate in any role-playing websites, you learn to create back stories for new characters and to distance yourself from them. In both scenarios it's the element of distancing yourself from a differing character and empathising with them, so that they don't think identically to you, or act the same way, and not all the things that have happened in your life have happened to them.

I can either be the main character in the poem, telling you what I'm experiencing, or an observer of something or someone else.

Sometimes, I don't figure in it at all. But not often

Usually when I write a poem, it has some part of me in it.. I can't really feel completely what someone else is feeling, so I don't write as well when there isn't even a tiny piece of myself and my own feelings in it.

When ever I write I usually try to put some of me in to it. I don't put alot in to it. When I put part of me in it and when a reader reads it, it makes them fell like they are in the poem like a story.

Poem are poems, they' re hand written thoughts so, i think a person can't write anything if they don't put their selves into it..Poems is YOU and your own feelings..
