Do I have an eating disorder?

I do not think I have an eating disorder but...in the last week I have lost 3lbs. Well actually I lost 4lbs by still eating just cutting out any junk food, and walking more than usual. My mother found me weighing myself the other day and she heard what the scale said (we have a talking scale) and she flipped. She was like "You'll become annorexic if you keep eating like this. I want you to eat more." I did for one night and I gained back 1lb. Now I am 99.5lbs or 100lbs or something like that. I was 102.5lbs when this started. I mean I am 5' 1" and I guess I'm not heavy for my height, but I want to be down to like 90lbs or something. I'm never going to starve myself, I'm just going to stop eating junk food permanently (like chips or or fries or candy or anything of the sort) and I am going to continue walking because it is getting nice weather. I just don't know what to think. I know I'll feel better about myself when I'm 90lbs, but...

At 5 foot 1 inch then the ideal weight varies between the extreme low end of 98 to the 132 lbs. according to the body mass index.
Anything under 98 is underweight and anything over 132 is overweight.

Now with that said... REMEBER that is just computation (math) that has never seen you nor replaces the care that only your physician can give you.

If you or your family are conserned in any way shape or form about your weight (either healthy or unhealthy) or your eating habits then you need to consult your physician.

You also need to take into consideration when computing your BMI your body frame, whether your athlectic or not, and muscle tone.

Yeah I am athletic...well I was until this year. I did gymnastics for 13yrs and this year I just walk more than I ever have before.

My highest weight ever was 113 and I really looked fat and my mother told me that I was gaining weight way to fast for someone like myself.
I didn't do anything about it and soon therafter I started to loose weight like crazy. I went down to 105.

No one knows what I am trying to do. I would never tell anyone. My mother only commented that once and I'm trying to make it look like I am eating a lot s she can't yell at me for not eating enough (although everything I'm eating is low in calories) and I am walking more than she knows.

Well I didn't really like the way I looked when I was 102.5lbs...When I noticed that I was loosing weight I did start to feel beter (in a strange way). Everytime I look at the scale and the number says lower I feel happy and just good all over. When I look and the scale says higher I feel like a looser and fat and just bad all over, so I know I'd feel a lot better about myself when I'm 90lbs.

I am very aware. I tried to do something like this 2 yrs ago, but I went a little more extreme. It felt great when I realized I was loosing weight, but somehow I managed to gain it all back. I did not fel great when I realized that.

Well whet I did was try to skip lunch everyday and not snack ansd only eat a small breakfast and a regular size dinner. It was hard on myself. Now I'm just cutting out junk food and excercising more.

  • DeathsRose

Yeah I know the feeling. My only problem is that most of my weight is in my stomach. It is all pudgy and stuff. Maybe if I work on that area by doing excercises I'll lose weight and look better too.

do situps and stuff like that. it might mae your weight higher but thats cuz your gaining muscle. i was anorexic for a little while adni lost like 20 pounds but with exercise and eating again...you will gain some of the weight back...but not too much.

  • DeathsRose

I was thinking about that, but I don't want to gain any weight back...I want to be like 90lbs and have a better looking stomach, but if its muscle then I guess I could live with that.

eating disorders reallly dont have to deal with the food itself. it does but it doesnt. it goes deeper than that emotionally and mentally. I didnt read alot of the posts above but yea it just sounds like your setting goals for yourself. being 100pounds and 5 foot isnt too bad. Im 5'10 and I weigh 145.

Just be safe with your eating habits and if your worried see a doctor.
    Good luck

poetess is right that you're caring too much for a number. nobody is going to look at you and say "wow, she looks 90 pounds," because they're not going to know. (and if they DID, they'd think it was too low). What they COULD be able to tell is "wow, she has a nice stomach," or "she looks really fit." You should care more for being healthy than for being a certain number. I think cutting out junk food and taking more walks is safe. It's even positive. I would suggest, however, that you don't try to hide your eating habits from your parents - that just breeds secrecy. Also, if your specific weight is bothering you so much, maybe you could get rid of your scale or just not use it. Focus on how you feel, not on what your scale says.

despite all that, though, it's not bad to have a little fat, if you're a girl. lots of people think it's sexy to have some curves. you sound like a petite girl, though, so... just do what's best for you. and try to love your body no matter what it looks like - there is no perfect form.

I don't look fat really, and I don't really have any curves either. Its sad I kno...lol...j/k...but I don't know. And yeah ^you are right

you dont have an eating disorder, but you need to be careful because you can get one with out even recognising it. i have bulemia, but whatever. it started off as anorexia, but im only 13, so my parents made me eat, so i thought it would just be easier to eat and then throw it up without them knowing. im not as thin as i would like, yet, but i will soon, just a few more pounds to go...
anyways, just be careful, you don't want to end up having an eating disorder, it is quite depressing!

I won't let it turn into an eating disorder...I could only imagine how deppressing it would be.

  • DeathsRose

No you're not a jerk...and I dunno...there may be a medical reason why you don't gain weight like you want to...but I think if you just eat healthy and maybe a little of the "junk" stuff you may gain weight...just a thought though.

    I think it's metabolism..It's very high.
I'm not quite sure if it counts as a disorder though..

eating junk food isnt going to help.

And original poster- it doesn't seem like you have an eating disorder, there is nothing wrong with eating healthy. but dont weigh yourself everyday! or even every week!

your weight changes so much just from water weight or having to use the bathroom! lol.

    that serves no purpose! lol.

i'm 5'1'' as well and i weigh like 130(uck) ive been eating healthier lately(trying atleast) and i still hate my body. =[ im going on a cruise and so need to lose some weight. my metabolism is so wicked slow. =[ and my mom doesnt believe in scales. xD im just -sigh- i hate the weather, id be outside if it wasnt all icky, cold, muddy and rainy. =[

I find it amusing that so many poor and starving people in the world would simply kill to have "losing 6 pounds" be their major problem/concern.
I find it sad that you have such a problem with your self image. Why? There are so many other, more constructive, things that you could focus your concerns on.

I understand your point but having an eating disorder is not like that at all. Belive it or not an eating disorder isnt baout weight. Many people have problems, they need a sense of control... depression comes along with an ED as does self esteem problems and loads of other things. Its not about weight... its about other problems...
I have bulimia and yes ill admit i do like it when the scales get lower but what sparked of my ED? No not just wanting to lose weight. I use to get bullied from people i care about, this messed with my self esteem ALOT.
Becuase oyu may find it ammusing that loseing 6 pounds its there bigest problem... but that isnt there bigest problem. Its far from it acctually.
A friend of mine was sexually abused... this along with a need for control led to her anorexia.

I think my problem is that I just have no self esteem and I feel as if I can't change things to make myself feel better...so this is something I can control to make myself feel better...(I dunno cleche yeah but...)

    No not cliche.
I think that no one's problems are cliche, all our problems have a different way, the way you deal with it, people may find cliche. But your problems are never cliche becuase your the one thats going through it all. Control is osmething many people crave.. Just know oyur not alone, and im glad you made this thread ebfore your eating habits developed into a serious ED.

I htink this might help you to improve your self esteem... There tips so do them. Do you also have low body image?

    10-minute technique

People with poor self-esteem often fail to give themselves enough time and space. So find 10 minutes every day to be alone and to just sit and do nothing. Some people find it helpful to close their eyes and imagine a country scene or the sight and sound of waves gently lapping against the seashore. During this 10 minutes, allow yourself to feel peaceful and happy. Enjoy this time. It is yours - and yours alone. And you deserve it.

Finding 10 minutes for you is a caring thing to do and you will feel better for doing it.

    Accentuate the positive

Often we make ourselves unhappy because we go over and over mistakes that we have made. But we can feel happier, and improve our self-esteem, if we re-think those things we believe we have done wrong or badly.

For example, one of my clients has to give presentations at work. He used to mentally beat himself up after every one. He would go over and over tiny errors in his mind. Now he writes an account of each presentation shortly after he' s given it. And I have encouraged him to write about all the things that went well - not badly. He doesn't need to write about the bad things - they will stick in his memory and he will try hard not to repeat them. But he will forget the good things - unless he writes them down.

So when you have a bad day, or something goes wrong in your relationship or at work, write an account of what went right with that episode, not what went wrong. The results will surprise you - and improve how you see yourself.

List 50 things you like about yourself

If you're seriously lacking in self-esteem this could take weeks! But persevere.

You can write down your characteristics, or things about your looks. You can even write down things that you do that you happen to like about yourself. For example, you may buy a copy of The Big Issue on a day when you're feeling particularly short of money yourself, or you may help an elderly woman in the supermarket sort out how much her groceries are going to cost, even though you're rushing to get your own shopping done in your lunch hour.

When you have reached your 50 good things, keep the list somewhere you can see it all the time.

Next comes an even harder part. Try to record one more, new thing you like about yourself every day for the rest of your life!

I will try not to loose any more than a few pounds.

And yeah I will try those self-esteem things...they really seem helpful.

  • Simple Sensation

^ Yeah especially the list 50 thing one. I suggest you write it and read it every morning until your self esteem improves and you feel better about yourself.
