I'm a young writer (11, 12 on may, 19th) and as a young writer I think it's a good thing. Being young and talented is good because it gives you a head start on everything. I have enough poems to last me up till I graduate college. On top of developing my skills which are seen as extradinary by some, not just because I'm young, but let's not get into that. Plain and simple it's good to be young and talented. |

I do believe I said "david and that other person." You were fighting with someone else, and Perfection was fighting with ANOTHER. |

We were not fighting... it is only natural to discuss and exchange thoughts... I do not have any bad thoughts about anybody and I enjoy to see how other people see things and then compare that to how I see them myself... Offcourse this will lead to some argumenting but we did not get offensive at all and therefore it is not a fight.. You must learn the difference between argument and fight before you can make an acusation like that.. |

Abby, I like the point you make about the tendency to resign oneself to an unquestioning existence. I certainly think that that is a problem in all areas of life, including poetry. There are poets who are very good, but they find a formula that works for them, and are thereafter afraid to stray from those self-constructed bounds. So would those people still possess the creativity and passion and defiance that first defined them as great poets? I'm not sure. Because they may admittedly still be spans above other poets, when it comes down to sheer talent, even if they remain in a rut. Although... if a poet writes about the same things in the same way all the time, they are bound to shortly become stale, mm? I think in order for poets (or any people, for that matter) to truly keep an active existence, they need to keep pushing themselves to try new things, improving, making mistakes, etc. Maybe the best poets, young or old, are the ones who remember to keep doing that. |

Sybillene, if I spelled your name right, the idea you and abby discussed about people falling into patterns is quite an interesting one, especally related to young people. The reason why young people are often disregarded is, like many poets in generel, they write about what they are most concerned with at the moment. Many young kids are concerned with a highschool type love, granted much of it mirrors Petrarchan Poetry, it is presented in an immature fashion (not all of it, so you youngsters out there don't need to jump down my throat). I don't like Petrarchan Poetry to begin with, so if younger writeres fall into this pattern I am not going to like any of their poetry. Usually a younger person's life in the power countries of the U.S. of A, and England, aren't broad enough to add extras to the patterns. Yes what I am saying makes one question about young and talented, but again, to break this habit, or mindset, a young person doesn't have to have hard life, just a view of the world through other people's eyes. They should write about what bothers others, not just people their age either. |

I dont think age matters i think all poetry is good in its own way. i started writing when i was 12 and have never actually thought about making good poems or not, i simply write how i feel and see what others think of how i wrote it. |

I agree. Age doesn't matter. Being a young writer myself (I'm 13), hearing that older, more experienced writers are praising us young'uns, it makes me happy. There's no such thing as being too talented too fast. It just gives us the rest of our lives to hone our skills. Hey, maybe someday one person here that's younger will be famous someday. |

I personally think that its a blessing, i mean i am 14 years old and i LOVE poetry. I mean i dont like it when people on this site and in my life, read my poetry and put me down because they think i am to young to write something so powerful and they think that i didnt write it, and that i stole it. To me if you are under 18 and you write, and you write good, its a gift, but to the people who have the gift, it feels like a burden. And all the older people think that " oh there to good, or something not right about it" its not us younger minded peoples faults that we have original ideas, i mean we are young and havent experienced alot so of course when we write there is going to be at least poem thats not cliche, and by the way who do you think we get our cliches from, OLDER that 18 peoples work gives us different ideas, thats why i dont see why being a young writer is such a bigdeal |

I agree completely Im 16 I dont know If I write "good" or not.. but I usually just write to calm myt restless mind .. I do agree w/ the .. harder life thing and we do sometimes just need to spill but I dont write or talk about things that happened in my past .. b/c I am .. ashamed of them or I just dont want people to know ..Im not sure I tend to write simply to let feelings out tho and it usually calms me down |

I'm only 14 (not saying i'm talented but...)and i guess to some people it may seem pretty scary cause with our naive little minds we can create horrid emotions with our poems. i understand that some people do get a bit out of control with their poem and guide their own life the wrong way. but not all young talented poets are that way. i write some sad depressing poems but it only rests my mind. but i wonder that alot too, what if it is just something that will lead my life the wrong way....that would suck =[ |
