I suffer from PTSD and would like to hear from others that do...What treatments worked for you?? How long did you take antidepressants...(if you did)..You know..that sort of stuff

Ya..I was also diagnosed with chronic recurring depression...they have me on Lexapro which seems to work well..They are going to have me do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy..But since the meds are working I don't see why I need to do the therapy...

Looks like not to many people have this problem huh?

Okay I know what that is, I had just never heard the abbreviation like that. Anyways, yeah that's pretty uncommon in young people, it's mostly war veterans but of course for people have suffered severe situational trauma...that's pretty intense. I'm not sure just anti-depressants would work on that.

Nope, but I have a bunch of other crap wrong with me. Try severe depression, ADD, and OCD.

    Peace out and take care.

Yeh i've heard about prolonged exposure therapy, what is it exactly.

but yes i was diagnosed with it in febuaray 2005. i also didn't find anti-depressent helpful. i find that the only way to take away flashbacks, anxiety attacks and anything else that one experiences with it is to face the problem that haunts you and try and heal from it, often this is done through therapy whatever kind. i have had both psychotherapy (sp) and cognitive behavioural therapy and both have helped. ptsd often takes years if not decades to overcome and even then there is always relapses and times when you feel unwell. also usually people with ptsd also suffer from a range of other things as well. for me having ptsd has changed my life completely, the way i handle situations and interact with people has changed, how has it changed your lives?

Yea i know what you mean, i have seen many different doctors and psychologists (from being in hospital) and each gave the same diagnoses with out knowing i had already been diagnosed with it...if that made any sense. so they are probably right. always good to get a second opinion

Hey, i suffer too. i used to be in a really abusive relationship (thrown down stairs, that sort of thing) and he raped me a few times....he threatened my life tried to kill me...but thats why i have it. i was diagnosed not to long ago and i've had since 9th grade (now in 11th) and i was given anti-depressants and anxiety meds shortly after that. i never take them....i hate relying on things to solve my problems so my therapist just tells me to do what makes me happy. i write, i exercise, i hang out and avoid stressful situations, oh, and i meditate every morning. that works the best for me. i love sitting on my bed meditating to the sound of the wind. i'm a do it yourself kind of person...i stopped doing drugs on my own, stopped cutting, everything. so idk how much help i will be but thats where my situation stands.

She's a killer- Congrats on overcoming all of this on your own..sounds like you're a very stong person and I'm sorry for everything he put you through.

beyond help-I have been dealing with this since I was about 10..so around 8 years..It always seemed to come and go lasting no more than a couple of months then coming back within a month..But for the last 2 years it hasn't went away so I started seeking professional help about two months ago...
My PTSD is from a long history of different 'family issues'..You would have a book to read if I listed everything so I won't even begin..If you're interested in hearing I can give you the basics..

Yea it's always gud to talk to people about this stuff (on my behalf) i like hearing about other people going through the same thing as me. even though i was only diagnosed with it in 2005 i had been experiencing it before then i just didn't realise what it was and couldn't think were it could have come from as i had blocked out everything that had and was happening. but i'll leave it up to you if u want to tell me, if you do than just pm me. do any of you experience times when you dissociate as well?

Tyanna--thank you very much, i try to be strong.

i heart kevin--you have it and they won't give you anything?? why not?

  • i r confused

Yea wow, if they don't give u anything, that really blows. Hey shes a killer, funny to see you here. I'm no expert on PTSD, nor do I have it, but I'm very close to somebody that has one. You were tellin me bout all of that earlier, and that really really sucks. But thats good you overcame all that. The only that I have to say on the matter is that you prolly should take our meds though. Though I understand not wanting to rely on anything. But it seems to me that you really are strong. Keep up the good work :)

Well...here's my story but I'll give the short version..lol..

My mom and dad are both alcholics..Until the age of 9 I wittnesed violence on a daily basis..I was also molested by a family member. My parents split when I was 9 and we (mom me and little brother)moved out of state..Dad would call saying he was going to come and kill us if we didn't come back..At age 10 I saw my sister get raped (she was 17 and drunk to the point she was passed out) I was to scared to stop it..When I was 11 my mom met my step dad and we moved in with him..again moving out of state..They got on meth really bad and has been every since..On my 12th B-day I got nothing..not even a "happy bithday tyanna" from my mom..For Christmas that year we got nothing..My step dad was verbally abusive to me..calling me a whore and a bastard..When I was 12 my stepdad kicked us out (me and my little bro) because we threatened to go to the cops..My mom stood behind him...So I moved in with my sis and pretty much moved from family member to family member untill I got out on my own..My whole family has drug and alcohol problems and none of them have anything to do with me b/c I lead a clean life....So there's my story..how about you all?

Lol my story is long and complicated and i don't usually talk about it coz than people automatically judge me or just don't understand

  • tyanna

I don't judge others when they have problems... I have been told by so many people that "It's all in my head" "life wasn't that bad"... I try to be understanding with everything.

My sympathy goes out to all that have PTSD, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, I've had it about as long as you, Tyanna.. It is a horrible thing to go through, I have panic attacks from it as well.. It can take over your life if you let it.. I never took anything for it, just found that helping others that have it, actually helps me.. My mom is VP of PTSDalliace.. And I used to research and help in areas I could.. It really does help.. Mine came from being in broken family, and stepdad being abusive in every way possible to me and my mother.. Not an easy thing to overcome.. But you can overcome.. I hope that you find some way to help.. It really never goes away, I still and always will have it. If you want to talk more, you can message me, or email me at CrazygirlAlly93@hotmail.com.. *hugs* talk to you soon. =)

I was diagnosed with PTSD in 5th grade, for multiple reasons. I have been extremely strong, and trying to stay away from meds and beating it on my own. I write and sing, and involve myself in extra curricular activities and try to do what i can. I still go to a therapist every monday and she helps me so much. If you ever wanna talk or anything, just PM me.

I was diagnosed with PTSD in January but I have had it most of my life. I was forced to go to a counselor in January when they diagnosed me with that and some form of depression. I refuse to take any kind of medicine though, I guess because I'm hard headed. SO my counselor said she doesn't believe in forcing teens to take meds.
