The cure to all depression

  • Independence Forever

This may sound mean but the cure to depression is:

whatever you surround yourself with is what you are gonna be. if you surround yourself with music shouting "I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" then you aren't gonna be all sunshine and roses.

who you surround yourselves with now is what you're gonna be like five years from now.

My answer to depression is maturity. Plain and simple, you can be left to wallow in your own grief or stand on your own two feet and walk forward. knowing that things are going to be better. Yes, depression is a key component to life, but its only an ingredient to let us grow.

I agree. to let depression rule you is madness, and yet many people do it. i govern myself, not my feelings. everyone has a rough time to say the least but rise above your tough times to teach and help others in your situations

I agree, but depression can be a great component in someone's life. And sometimes it is slightly harder than normal to overcome it.

Obviously for the people with the names, "Blood on the razor I cut myself with this morning when my boyfriend dumped me..." aren't to that point, but would certainly love the attention and sympathy.

Well David I am sorry but that is just silly.. Seriously! Have you ever had depression?? Now I'm not talking the "winter blues" I'm talkin DEPRESSION.. Well..let me tell you about it..I've dealt with depression for 8 years..since I was 10.. I went through a lot growing up which is why I have this...I also have PTSD. I tried everything...exercise..eating healthy..peaceful music...walks in the woods..etc. etc...Nothing helped..In fact, loud 'mean' music was pretty much the only thing that HELPED..b/c it made me aware that I was not alone...I just recently started getting professional help and was put on Lexapro..Now that helped..NOT peaceful music or "calm" environments... I'm sure it would for what they call "winter blues" or the occasional "down" but not for full blown depression..At least for me it didn't..
So..now I ask...Where did you get this idea? Have you done research?? I'm assuming you didn't..

  • tyanna

Another thing...I came from a bad neighborhood and obviously a bad family..I am not like them..I am a good person, I don't use drugs, I don't drink and I am not going to be a piece of shit mom..So who you surround yourself with is not always who you turn into...Your opinions could really have a negative effect on some of the younger ones on here that also suffer from depression...It's like saying "It's your fault you are depressed"

  • silvershoes

Haha, I "suffer from severe depression." I hate saying that. However, when I am upset, I listen to happy music. I don't usually bottle up and try to make myself feel worse. Depression can be a bit of an addiction, but that's something maturity can solve. Learn to take care of yourself, and do what's best for you--all the time, not just went you need it, but especially when you know what you should be doing to lighten the load, or what not.

    Yep.

True depression is a medical condition. So please don't bash the people that have it. Unfortunately depression has become a fad/trend. A lot of people just act like their life sucks to get attention or to fit in. Quite often the truly depressed people are not the ones you would suspect.

David...I'm still wondering if YOU have ever had depression???

  • Independence Forever

I've had friends die, parents split up, monthly fights at school, and the thought of going nowhere in life, being dragged down by those who persecute me. but i will never despair.

i'm not gonna be depressed, there's always hope for me and for other people and by calling me silly saying i know nothing of depression is just an expression of ignorant cruelty. you don't know me or my life.

some of the greatest people in history have had several deaths around them but did great.

abe lincoln lost two sons before he was elected his second time as president

john adams had to deal with two sons dying and his best friend stabbing him in the back during the election of 1800

  • tyanna

Ok..well for you do deal with things so easily is great..BUT SOME POEPLE CAN"T....and to pretty much say "well it's your fault..you don't have to be depressed" is just wrong....I doubt anyone would "fake" depression..or keep themselves depressed because they wanted to be that way.. Why the heck are the professionals and meds for depression if it's something everyone can cure on their own???

  • Independence Forever

Because everyone wants a little miracle cure in a jar. and your little psychiatrist who charges a few hundred dollars per session doesn't care enough.

we live in a society where everyone wants to pass the buck onto something or someone else.

please dude, i wish i could get payed a few hundred a session to have people tell me every little problem in their lives just so i can prescribe some drug.

listen here little missie, my mother was prescribed with drug after drug until finally she almost died of an overdose.

how would you feel if you were told to wake up mom and she didn't wake up? don't pretend like you have me figured out

  • tyanna

I'm not pretending to have you figured out...Don't know where ya got that idea...And as a matter of fact...My psychologist and psychiatrists aren't charging me a dime...And they are the best in this area...Ya..that's right..I see them for an hour everyother week and it's FREE OF CHARGE...They do this often for those in serious need of help...
Like I said...good for you for dealing with things on your own...but the fact still remains that not everyone can deal with it...And I'm not even talking about meds....I am talking about THERAPY...Getting your feelings out there and haveing a professional help you get through it...
So I don't know why you are getiing all huffy puffy...I am stating FACTS...not just my opinion.

  • tyanna

And it's not just about telling them your problems...They put you in specific therapy for your specific needs...For PSTD..it's CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy....So maybe you should do some more research about what exactly it is they do for you....B/C I have been dealing with my depression for 8yrs..and it has taken them 2-3 months to make me feel 95 percent better...
Oh..and try this...being abandoned by your mom..being molested by your dad..having every single family member turn their back on you b/c they have drug problems and you choose to lead a clean life...

  • Independence Forever

Then why don't you help others in your situation? why not help prevent something like what you went through to happen again.

help yourself sure, but help others too. that's why i work in a youth center, work on a bus route to church with little kids, and work in a nursing home.

  • tyanna

I am 18 years old fixing to start college..I am going for a Masters in Social Work...I am also going to train in Law enforcement..So ya..I plan to..But untill recently I haven't been mentally stable enough to even work..Seeing someone with a beer in their hands..or even certain smells etc. would send me into flashbacks...Which is why I am getting CBT..

I don't agree with your opinion, you say it's what you surround yourself with, and you gave the example of music.
I listen to alot of music that I guess can be categorized in what you said, and I'm a very happy person. I just think, the reason some people listen to that "music" is because it explains how they're feeling. They relate to it.

I don't think music has a way with making you depressed or whatever. I suffer from depression and I can't help it at times. It comes and goes as it pleases, no real way of triggering it, unless I'm not seeing it.

  • DeathlyAmore

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

Actually, listening to "depressing" music when I'm depressed has a very cathartic effect on me. what VSambulance said.

but I guess it's different for everybody.

Media outlets will always affect you. No matter who you are. It's how you're affected by it that determines whether you're suffering from a chemical inbalance or not.

Whatever you surround yourself with is what you are gonna be. if you surround yourself with music shouting "I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" then you aren't gonna be all sunshine and roses.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at this...What does atomosphere (as in your surrounding: music, posters etc) have to do with what your mentality will become or whether it will lead you to depression.

All that gobbledy gook you're saying makes me seriously laugh because it is nothing more than pseudo-advice.

Atomosphere is not the source of depression but certain obstacles that has come to your life, or devestated you...Be it bearevement, anxiety, failure is what causes depression...Nothing more..

Again I say don't make me laugh...

  • Alex Marlatt

It's true. That's the problem with all this crappy 'free-speech' media. It puts on a cool front that kids look up to and then shows a million and one different problems for the sake of ratings and kids pick up on those things. If you see a something every single day saying it's ok to use drugs for instance you're much less likely to say 'no' when offered drugs. If you see movies where one partner cheats twenty times a day and it always ends out well then kids are going to think there are no consequences and ruin something good. If you listen to music where they sing about depression and self-mutilation and then kids are goin' to think that acting that way will turn them into a 'xcore rokstr' and delude themselves into thinking they are depressed. And eventually they will feel depressed and then they're stuck in a circle of self-hate.
    That's my take anyways.

    I'd just like to say

YOU CAN'T CURE ANYTHING THAT IS HEREDITRY!!

if it's in your genes there is not way you can get away from it. tablets might help but it'll stilll be there fighting against the meds.
    just thought i'd say that.

When I listen to happy music when Im sad it makes me more sad. Cuz I feel like Ive gone so low tht now I have to be pitied. And when I listen to sad music when Im sad I still feel sad, but less sad. Does tht make any sense?

I agree with "sweetly numb" -- happy music just makes me sadder because im jealous of the happy people. sad depressing music makes me feel better because i know im not alone, that others feel the same pains.

if what you surround yourself with is what youll be in five years then "OH SH!T". my moms a crackhead and my dads a drunk.. i cant not surround myself with them... theyre there when they want to be. i cant change it..
its not what surrounds you its how you let what surrounds you effect you.

i know i wont be there in 5 years because i see what its done to them and our family and theres no way ill ever go there.

this thread was obviously started by someone who has never really been 'depressed'

There is a big difference between "depression" and "feeling down" about things... Im not trying to be-little anyone on this site... I've felt down when I was younger and felt all alone and felt like the world was going to end and how could I pull myself out of it etc etc - but the only person who can change that is yourself. YOU have to realise that life is worth living and make a very strong effort to pick yourself up and start living it again without looking down all the time.

Clinical depression, i agree, is not fixed by peaceful walks in the park and not dressing in black etc! Clinical depression is usually an imbalance in the hormones or something which can usually only be fixed with little happy pills that balance you out again.

But so often people get mixed up between the two. There is a difference, one you can help yourself, the other you need to seek help.

  • Viola

Yeah, i agree with MO ^

some people can't just be happy..
ok really who would want to be sad?..it's not like we all wake up in the morinng and we decide if we want to be happy or sad. some people do not choose..they just ARE sad. i mean they have a depression. and it's serious..you can't just tell them "you can be happy if you want to". cause it's out of their control.

now for some of others it is sort of like that..(i mean the people who are not mentally ill or do not suffer from a depression)..they can change the way they look at life and make themselves be somewhat happier.

but what i'm saying is it all depends. not everyone can just "make themselves happy".

at least that's what i think.
