Hypocrisy!!

    Hi Y'all,

Let me start by saying that, I'm completely sick of the idea of hypocrisy being used as a debating tool in every arena of life from politics to religion. I'm so tired of people standing up in righteous indignation to denounce the hypocrisy of their foe.

Let me stand up and proudly say "Yes! I AM a hypocrite!" By the time I'm done here I think you will too. The truth of the matter is that the only way to NOT be a hypocrite is to not believe in anything. If you stand for nothing you can't be a hypocrite. As soon as you care about anything you fall prey.

Do you believe that speed limits are necessary for safety on the public roads? Have you ever broke the speed limit? HYPOCRITE!

Are you an Atheist? Have you ever said "Jesus Christ!" or "For Gods sake!" HYPOCRITE!

Are you an environmentalist? Do you still drive your car and use energy to heat your home? HYPOCRITE!

Are you a Christian? Have you ever sinned? HYPOCRITE!

The possible examples are endless. We are all hypocrites in our own ways. When a person tells you that excessive drinking is bad for you and you shouldn't do that, is it made less true if the person saying it is a drunk?
If someone says stealing is wrong and you shouldn't do that, is it made less true if a thief says it?
True statements are still true regardless of who speaks the words. I guess it's just too easy to try to deflect unpleasant truths by discrediting the person who delivers them.
If I hear just one more political or religious rant about how the other guy is a hypocrite I will deliver my vengence unto him using plagues and whatnots...Lol.

You're 100% right...everyone is a hypocrite. Although sometimes, in an argument, sometimes it is used when someone stands for something but does something else. So do you think that in a debate if someone is clearly doing something that contradicts their argument, should we avoid using the word "hypocrite" to describe them?

I agree with you noir; however I believe that the line is made when ignorance leaves the question. Plenty of hypocrisy cannot be helped, nor is it realized, but once a person is aware of it and can change the situation it is that person's obligation to do so. If that person fils to, and chooses to sit in their hypocrosiy, then they are worse off than those who either change, or still do not know.

I get where you are going with this Noir, but the way you posted it kinda reminded me of those guys who wander the streets of every city with placards calling everyone sinners and quoting some random section of the Bible.

But I agree with you, we are all Hypocrites, it is almost impossible to live a normal life in our modern world and not be open to someone calling you such a thing.

The reality of the word however is abused as I think you tried to point out. I am pro life and pro choice, but, by God, for the sake of my lassy, who hates mice, if one gets into our flat, I kill it, which is a very simple example.

Very often, that things which we hate about others are exactly the things we don't like about ourselves, externalized, which I think it when the word Hypocrite comes into useful practice as an insult.
