I'm just curious -- what's the benefit of having the ratings? Is there a possible way that a member may choose to be rated or not?

Ratings seem to be there for decoration =)

The rating system is... not at all important. It you are able to maintain a 4.3 or above average, you get a square thing in your profile as a reward.

No, you can't choose whether you can be rated or not. However, you may choose to ignore your rating.
