Hi, I'm Hatori, and I want to meet Japanese people. I'm going to visit there soon and I want to learn as much as I can. If you can tell me anything or just want to talk, I'm all for it!

Ooh :D I shall look at that thread and I'd love to be your friend.
Anything that you know really... How are you suposed to greet someone? Is there anything special about it?

People are really formal. When you say hello, be sure to say it the formal way, include the honorific -san to thier name, and bow with your hands tucked inward (to the sides if you're a guy).

Im not Japanese, but I know that Sukidayo is I love you. My friends are teaching me Japanese and about the Japanese culture.

    Well... that's ONE way of saying "I love you" in Japanese. Not quite sure if that'll be very useful for the person going to Japan though >_>;;

  • Hatori

Okay :D. Hands tucked in... San is higher than kun, right? Also, should you call a person, by their last name or first name? Ex: The person's name is Hatori Hathaway, would you say Hathaway-Chan or Hatori-chan? Or, are they both wrong?
Heh, thank you for your help :D.

Who knows, I might say, "I love you", in Japan :D.

    Have a good day :D!!

-kun is a more friendly way of calling someone. -Chan is used for girls but -san would also work. In calling someone, you use thier last name so Hathaway-chan would be correct. You can also call someone by thier first name alone, but it means you are either VERY close to that person or you're being rude. =P

Hope it helps. Feel free to ask any more or pm me ^.^

Most people use '-kun' for boys and '-san' for older people. :x

You might also say 'Hathaway-san' to show respect for that person. :)

  • Hatori

    Okay, thanks!
Hmm... can you teach me some basic words? Things like "thank you" and "I am ____." Not necessarily thode words, but similar ones? (can you include pronounciation as well?)

Err... I think you should take a quick month/month and a half course on conversational Japanese. Online programs/courses also work if you're on a tight schedule and not able to go get lessons in a classroom setting.

    Heh, yes. That's a good idea :D.

Yeah .. not Japanese but I lived there for three years :) Atsugi baby! Mount Fuji is beautiful, btw.

I only lived there kindergarden to third grade. But I'm a sophomore now and I still remember it. I was a model there... you know blonde hair and blue eyes is a popular thing there.

Yeah.. I can't spell worth crap and I only know a few phrases in Japanese.

They are really nice, like I made so many friends on the trains.. lol... ' look at the cute little american girl! ' yeah im very socialable.

Fujiyama is the tallest rollar coaster there.. and it soooo freaking sweet. on the way up you could see mount fuji in the back so pretty...

About the san and kun... whatever our last name is Schmelter but the japanese turned it to Schumechan. So... if that helps .. :) my cat's name is boo but we call him Boosan.

    Loved it!

Saying '-san' shows respect for the person/whatever. To me, '-kun' is mostly suitable for male! ^^ '-chan', to me, suits almost everything uh.. cute! ^^'
