Check this out if you are an athiest who wants a religion.. : )

    http://www.the-brights.net/

Very interesting, if slightly arrogant stuff. I found this place through the excellent book by Richard Dawkins called "the God Delusion", which if you have any interest in faith and religion, I'd suggest you read.

I am going to research these guys further, I wish they'd change their name, brights sounds really cocky...

But yeah, I'm all for naturalistic athiests grouping up and making a name and stand for themselves, particularly in the religious political sphere of America.

Must you make me laugh. You mean agnostics? Atheists are people who deny the existence of a god (like me)

I think you better edit your post and gear it towards agnostics, people who want to believe but haven't found any reason to.

Trust me, It makes a big difference. I go to a Catholic school, so my religion teacher should be proud =]

Brights are not people who want to believe in God, not at all.

Did you even read the description on the site?

It sounds like a protest against something...

I don't think it is religion, but merely the idea of atheism...I think they want to detach themselves from any known connection with supernaturality but rather look into the naturality of things.

I unfortunately am not a bright, but hey I would be if they stopped this americianized appeal or petition which seems very juvinile to me...

It's quite Ironic how you stumbled to this website "Brights"

Poetess, could you explain why you think it's denial to not believe in the supernatural or mystical?

And Noir, there was no stumble mate, If you'd read my previous post, you would see that I checked it out from a link in a book I am reading. I too don't like their name, point of fact I think they sound like a cult trying to prove a point...but I though what with all the religious debates that go on in here, some of you might find it interesting.

    Ironic indeed.

I read the home page for them and it was interesting lol I understand what they are trying for but I don't know if they'll be able to find a way to actually do it without becoming a cult that does more harm then good =P My boyfriend is a Athiest but he believes in the supernatural *as in dragons, werewolves and vampires* as well as supernatural gifts *such as being empathic or stuff like that* just he doesn't believe that theres a god in control of the world ^_^ I tend to believe the same most of the time *although I'm still a little lost between how I was raised and what I see now =P*

I know they sound a bit weird, but I think looking at the world without a mystical or supernatural viewpoint is far more benificial to things like Politics and law etc.

For this reason, I hope they do well.

Most likely our ancestors would have been inspired to build a fire by Richard Dawkins. However it is unfortunate that the fire would have been ignited under his ass under the delusional interpretation of the God inspired commandment thou shall not kill. Many find it difficult to see the irony that when a map is not followed many blame the map. I see no harm in the updating of a map to fit the altered path. Atheism is no less a belief system than any other religion. It is true that politics stand to gain from what people believe. Some foresee a global warming. A favorite poet of mine said that God moves in passion, and rests in reason. Science is for sale just like Richard Dawkins's book. If my data is correct, the scientist that spread the propaganda that the climate cannot be altered by human activity, are paid by the oil companies. Science is not yet infallible nor is it beyond political manipulation. What system is beyond abuse?

The difference is Micheal, Atheists, if they were to have the power that right wing fundamentalist Christians do in American, and therefor worldwide politics, would not make decisions, not push for laws and legislations that had religious origins or motivations.

Children in schools would be taught the best theories, the most stringently researched ideas and notions only. Gay people would most likely never have been persecuted as they have under a Christian influence on politics and social structure. And an idiot like Bush would most certainly not be in power today in your fine country.

Science is the best way we have of finding out the truth about our universe and everything in it. Of course it's not flawless and of course people make money from it, that does not detract however from the fact it is more reliable in every way in it's claims than any religion, ever.

I do not understand man's natural need to artificially manufacture groups that mold people's views to a man-made ethos. If they don't understand something, why can't they just go and find out about it? One doesn't have to create religious groups that skew the definition of collective right and wrong.

As you may know a famous praise the Lord minister Jim Baker has a gay son that finds comfort in the scriptures, Yes, he may profit financially, but who are we to judge him. I find it disgusting that wealthy T.V. Evangelist were allowed to use tax free donations to endorse greedy candidates. If there has been a time that there was not corruption in politics and religion please enlighten me.

An atheist who wants a religion? but isn't the point of atheism that you don't believe in a higher being?

It's about getting together in a group to share a partially linked way of thinking.

The very heart of the Brights movement is that they have no one unifying believe, except that they look at the world without any paranormal or mystically divine views, which means they deal in solid realities and human ideas, not Godlike ones.

Atheist grouping together does not make them a religion, just organised so as to put forward their message and idea in a strong way.

Strength in Unity..and we need their message right now, so badly.

That is great for you Mohamed, not so great for all the people who have been killed because they bellieve in a different God from your one, or someone elses one.

This is about seperating mystical believe from human politics and education.
