Personally, I'm a firm believer in never 'needing' a rhyme because I suck at it. So I prefer not to rhyme on purpose - as doing so, as you said, 'ruins the poem' when it sucks. It does! So if you're that stuck, unless it'll completely screw the rhythm of your poem - Don't rhyme! |

If you're at the point where you're considering re-writing the poem just so it rhymes, you might want to consider using words that almost rhyme. Case In Point, look up Seamus Heaney's "The Barn". It doesn't ruin the whole flow of the poem and analytical readers will point it out if used consistently as a more unique way of presenting the poem. |
