This is by George Meredeth i need to do a summary on what this means, can some1 help me?

The Works of George Meredeth - memorial edition Volume XXVI
pg. 31 The Lesson Of Grief

"Not ere the bitter herb we taste,
Which ages though of happy times,
To plant us in a weeping waste,
Rings with our fellows this one heart
    Accordant chimes.

When I had shed my glad year's leaf,
I did beleive I stood alone,
Till that great company of Grief
Taught me to know this craving heart
    For not my own"

I copyed exactly from the book, same spacing and words. thiss is what i decyphered. right or wrong?

Line 1: bitter tast int only kind
L2: being bitter thinking of happy times is other kind
L3: plant: like wallowing in sadness like a plant in the soil
L6: After year of happiness (past year)
L7: he thought he was only one sad
L8 then finds out that every1 too feels grief and he iisnt alone with his feelings.
