Help on understanding a poem

My english teacher has assigned my class to write a paper on "Saying Yes" by Diana Chang. We are suppose to answer the question "What causes personal or societal dissonance?" Now the problem is I have read the poem, but I dont see an ounce of dissonance in the poem. Maybe someone can help me? I will paste the poem below.

    Saying Yes

    “Are you Chinese?”
    “Yes.”

    “American?”
    “Yes.”

    “Really Chinese?”
    “No . . . not quite.”

    “Really American?”
    “Well, actually, you see . . .”

    But I would rather say
    yes

    Not neither-nor,
    not maybe,
    but both, and not only

    The homes I’ve had,
    the ways I am

    I’d rather say it
    twice,
    yes

    Dissonance referring to sound?

If you take that literally, the poem, being a modern one, is characterized by lack of rhyme or meter scheme that would give it a pleasing sound when a person would read it.

If your teacher meant dissonance referring to lack of agreement, then:

The Chinese cannot make a definite choice. He/she keeps bouncing in between choices, then takes them back, causing confusion and thus, dissonance.

Poems don't have to have meaning.
