Titles vs poem

Do you start with the title and then write the poem
or do you write the poem then chose the title

    the majority of the time?

Personally, I start with titles, I find them everywhere and thats what inspires me to write.

Well you'd choose the title first, why? It sets the parameters for the poem. Unless of course you choose the poem by the first line like Emily Dickenson or you could use the topic of your poem as your title. Personally I find choosing the title first easier.

I definitely write the poem first. Titles can be annoying, to me... sometimes they work to give the poem a clearer or more interesting perspective, but sometimes they're just... there. I have trouble thinking of them sometimes, as well. Often I just take a phrase from the poem, and say "there you go!"

Good question, i agree with the titles giving you inspiration and sometimes do this but mainly i write the poems and struggle with the titles lol xxxxx

    I would guess it's about 50/50

Sometimes I do that too, i start writing the poem and can never come up with a title

I usually write the poem and then decide on a title. However when I do start with a title I usually tweak it a few times after I finish the poem.

I do poem first because if you start with a title then your obligated to stick to that "theme" but if you do the poem first you then have the ability to pick a title on whatever you chose. =]

Title gives me inspiration mostly so I start with title and that's why I love titled contests

I start with a title, then write the poem. then after i finish the poem. i totally and completely change the title. lol.

i use inspiration from the title, but when i finish the poem, it has often flown in a totally and completely different direction. so the title has to be adjusted.

Most times that I have inspiration for a poem it will be the body of the poem that forms in my mind and then transcribed to script, only then will I think of a title for the poem.

I always write the poem first. I might have an idea for a title, but I usually make the title last, so I know it matches the poetry

It depends. If I know how this particular poem is going to turn out, I can decide on a title. But if I'm just in the mood to write, I write it, edit it, then title it once I'm finished with it completely.

I do the poem first the title comes to me naturally after I have written it. Except when I do contests then I work my way into the title. ~mel

Inspiration > raw poem > finalized poem > title

I've tried starting with the tite first but then it disrupted my flow of thinking and ruined the essence of the poem..

It's really up to the writer as to which style he is more comfortable with..

I write the poem itself first. I get all the emotion out and then after the poem is finished I find the title that best suites the poem. To me it's easier to do it that way becaue then when you are writing you don't have boundries. You can take your poerty anywhere.

    Poem then title.
Unless im doing a ocntest where ive been given a title... Or acrostics..

  • Brittany

Wow. so many different opinions, and a lot that are the same. oh my.

well personally...sometimes picking a title first restricts the poem and i get stuck.

other times the title is my inspiration and i use that to get the creativeness flowing.

it really just depends. honestly i think the real decision should be made if you have a title that you think is striking before you write the poem...use it. if you need to write the poem then come up with an attention grabbing title it's just the way it goes.

simply, if you have a title, use it.
if you dont, write and find one to use.

i agree with the people who say it's 50-50.

I think I write the poem first. when I finish my poem, I read the whole poem, and try to find the right title for it. ^^

I write the poem first, then I find an appropriate title. But sometimes, very rarely, I think of an amazing title and try to write somehting to fit it.
