It basically does both. It helps you cope with the depression. It makes you feel like "yea im sad, but I can deal with the depression a little bit better"

My one friend is on anti-depressants. Before she took it, she couldn't function. She couldn't take care of her baby or family. Now that she's on it, she still feels depressed sometimes but she's able to easily push the thoughts away and experience some fun and happy moments with her family. She's more involved. She's not missing out on so much.

It doesn't block out reality. Depression is the result of a chemical inbalance. Anti-depressants are designed to re-stablize that balance. So it doesn't block anything, just fixes what was wrong in your body. Reality is still the same, except that after the meds you're supposed to be able to function properly. The chemical is used when it needs to be instead of it being dormant, as it often is with people diagnosed with depression.

I was diagnosed about a year ago, and i hate meds. i guess it has something to do with me wanting to do it by myself and hating dependency. as much as i hate them and dont take them i think they do help. they made me less depressed, i focused more on the things important to me, but mine madfe me sick, they made me feel ill and i wasn't ok with that. but bottom line they help you, most of the time. my doctor says that 70% of the time however they don't.

LISTEN: Hoenstly, everyone may me for this but I know for a damn fact the "medication" for all the silly disorders DO NOT HELP. Yes, they block you from reality. Have you read the warning lables on those meds? They say Beware- This medicine may cause thoughts of , blah, blah, blah. Do you know how the phsyciatrists decide on a disorder? They sit at a table and someone lists the disorders and they take a vote on what they think would make the most money. I'm serious. God, Kill me if I'm lying or unsure. I am POSITIVE of this stuff. If you want away from the "doctors" and the "medications" then go to www. .com. *shrugs* I've been a scientologist all my life and my life is almost perfect. I know how to handle every situation and how to pick my friends! Try it out!!

    Calm down rage warrior...sheesh...

If psychiatrists proscribed meds for money only, they would be fired and arrested. Because its illegal. Duh.
