Gothic is type of architechure (spl?) prevalent in Europe during the Middle Ages. It had high vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and thin (compared to Romansque) walls. It got its name because it replaced Romansque (named for the Romans). In real life the Goths sacked Rome, the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The name is probably an attempt to prevent it from replacing Romansque. It didn't. Visit any old European cathedral and you'll see how beautiful the art work is. |

The present deffination of gothic i think in most peoples minds is someone that wears mostly black, and kindof dwells on the darker side of life. Therefore most of them associate[sp] them with Satanists and Witches. However most are neighther they are just people that like to wear black and feel and alot of them were the converse shoes. Trip pants are very popular among the gothic communite also.(baggy pant. usaully black[duh!] that have pockets all down them.) honestly if i wore the, since im so short, id probibly trip over my self(probibly the reason for there name lol) I'm really not sure how else to explain it. I guess it would be anything that you can buy at hot topic. lol |

Antony is my friend hey hey lol! well i disagree with his term of goth though. *sorry buddy*, but i buy clothes from hot topic 95% of the time. i have tripp jeans and im not gothic. i think goths are just another stero type term, but also i think goths thrive on the thoughts of evil, sinister things. i dont know might be wrong, but everyone is obtained to an opinion! |

I've been called Emo twice before by people who knew me: But I'm not going to be labled as a cutter because I do not do that. It's a lable and peopel are stupid to assume that they can group you all into one tight little block. |

Goth is just a style of dress. I consider myself Gothic because I wear black all of the time and dark make-up. Some of the common "Gothic" styled clothing are tripp pants (those things are awesome!), corsets, and fishnet. Usually silver jewelry and it's mostly by coincidence that those people are usually also the ones that listen to rock music and like art and poetry. Just like emo I think is another style of dress. The hair is usually why people call you emo. I don't think it means you have to be a cutter although some people are. |

Ok. i have... dark hair, as you can see, and i wear black eyeliner, and black mascara, but i dont over-do it, it looks fairly natural. i wore a black shirt and some girl called me a goth. i was like.. youre ^^%#*^%ing kidding me right? i cant wear a black shirt without being stereotyped? i kind of spazzed on her, because i get this alot. but iw ear colors all the time and dont act depressed, which is the usual 'goth' stereotype.. another guy asked me if i was goth because i was quiet, because i didnt know anyone. |

I liked kevins answer, im a little older than some, and in my day, gothic was a completely different thing than is has become today, it was a label a lifestyle if you will, back in those days, everyone was classified as something, but certain groups clung together, for example the punk rockers of yesteryear, and the mods and the goths and the fags (which was not a derogatory term to us freaks back then) because we were all freaks that truly didnt fit in anywhere, its totally different today, back in my day, we couldnt even go into a restaurant, they would lilterally say, get the hell out, cars of jocks would chase us and beat the hell out of us, no offense, but the generation today have no understanding of what it was like back in the day to be a freak, or back to the topic gothic, most of my gothic friends were picked on the most, becuase OF COURSE they had to be gay, what im trying to say is that i realize that there are still stigmas that remain, but be thankful that the generations that came before you took the full brunt of the crap that your generation will never have to endure....and i know i'm gonna get a bunch of flack for this but....oh well.... |

This is so funny to me that people waste their times labeling themselves as gothic (I am not naming anyone -coughs-) the way ppl dress in America cannot even compare to the "gothic" styles in europe they put us to shame (hot topic is not gothic) I was bullied for years because I wore on quote "all black" and everyone thought I worshiped the devil. I like pants with chains and devil driver tshirts but that does not mean I am "gothic" or consider myself such. I think people try sooo hard to fit this label that it is ridiculous. |
