The meaning of Christmas.

Okay, so what does christmas really mean to you lot? Surely it can't be all commercialism and greedy children...can it?

Nope, I'm sick of all that crap. At the risk of sounding like a Miss America, Christmas to me is about forgiveness and family and being together and also (of course) the birth of Christ. And hopefully, war being over. I just think it sucks so bad that people are still being killed even though it's Christmas. I mean, would it be so bad if for one incredible day there was no killing or bombing?

Yeah, but everyday should be like that really. Well...not the family...not with my family anyway. I am not a christian, so I don't really celebrate the birth of jesus, but peace and all that. Thats what it shoud be like everyday. But its human nature thats the problem really. We're greedy buggers. And we have leaders that are so full of crap.

Thanks. But you and I know that in reality, Christmas isn't like that. In the days leading to it, we imagine us all getting along around the fire/crimbo tree/T.V./Crimbo dinner. When our family, a couple of my uncles will start a farting contest, little kids will be screaming because their parents didn't think to but batteries to their ne presents, cousins whos names I can't quite remember will fight over christmas cracker gifts and to top it all off, some terribly bohemian old aunt will put on a paper hat and start singing. I'm really not that tolerant. My nerve usually snaps before midday.

Perhaps your right. I should be happy with my crude relatives. Most of them are pretty old and probably aren't gonna be around much longer.

I think that Sammy Cahn &J ames Van Heusen put it very well in their song, "The Secret Of Christmas," which is sung by SHeDAISY:
(I love all of the following lyrics, butit is summed up perfectly in the last four lines)

It's not the glow you feel
    When snow appears
    It's not the Christmas card
You've sent for years and years and years
    Not the joyful sound
    When sleigh bells ring
    Or the merry songs
    Children sing

    The little gift you send
    On Christmas day
Will not bring back the friend
    You've turned away
    So may I suggest
    The secret of Christmas
Is not the things you do at Christmas time
But the Christmas things you do
    All year through

Is it really so rewarding? If its worthwhile I might actually try helping some people this Christmas. My Aunty works at a place for abused womenn and street workers. She has been begging me to go and cheer them up. Maybe I will.

I think the meaning of Christmas has been taken advantage of. It started out as a time to be with one's family, and just enjoy each other. Show each other that we care about one another with gifts and such. Now, it's turned into a commercialized holiday that's only meaning is "BUY BUY BUY!"
I hate it... And what's worse is, it's getting personal... Yeah... a few might understand that...

Christmas to me, is giving a gift to someone and seeing them smile.
