There is no such thing as free speech

The concept of "free speech" is pretty much a lie. we, society as a whole, are only allowed to speak our minds if its in the confines of what is deemed "acceptable." It's quite sad, everything we say is moderated and if someone dare speak outside the lines, it can and will be held against them.

I agree. It's stupid how they tell us we have the freedom of speech, yet they set guidelines for us and deem what is "acceptable" and "not acceptable". That is not for society to decide, that decision must be made individually. We all know what we should say and what we shouldn't. We have to set guidelines for ourselves, speak with moderation; consideration, of other people and of their rights not only to their freedom of speech but to protection from those you speak poorly of and harshly against them. Some people just set bad guidelines for themselves. Some people speak beyond their right. I can see why society set guidelines, because people have no control or morals.

Exactly, but I feel like sometimes these guidelines inhibit the truth as well!

    All society is like that.

Germany for instance claims that they have free speech. However swastikas and saying 'Sieg Heil' will get you arrested and fined. I understand why. Nazism is sick and the German people despise it but they cannot claim to be advocates of free speech if they do that. Also it's illegal to point at your forehead while looking at someone.

True. But it wouldn't have to be so if only people were willing to HEAR the truth. Some people even just want to be told what they want to hear, whether its the truth or not.

^ Ey, watch your mouth about Germany. If you want me to start talking about America, then all I would have to say is cheeseburger.

What do the Germans call frozen water from the sky? ...Hail! :)

Lukas: I am not insulting Germany. My family's German and Germany is the nicest place I've ever been. I'm just saying that there are laws that don't make sense there. There are those kind of laws appear in every nation. France, Britain, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, China, America, Russia, and every other land in the world have laws that do not make sense. No insult intended mate.

"Omg what, he was inciting, became loud and obnoxious...he deserved what he got....it's one thing to speak your mind, another when you become disrputive and prevent others from being able to participate in a decent manner...I would have stung him too....especially when he resisted them trying to escort him out"

That's ridiculous. You made a point earlier about shooting someone on your lawn in presumably a KKK outfit and then you think its okay for the police/security to taser a guy simply for being disrespectful? Whats next, does that mean if a guy says "hey baby" to me on the street I can knife him? Or if someone gives me a dirty look I can spray mace (mase?) in their eyes?

    here's my free speech:
violence is ridiculous and it appalls me that people in this world condemn violence yet at the same time thinks its okay to take the law in their hand when THEY think its messed up.

I see your point Bob but I strongly disagree

I would say that there is such a thing as freedom of speech.

And the concept is especially applied in open societies and westren societies.

However it may not give total unadulterated freedom, but it is freedom nonetheless.

Many people would love to be in your situation, where you can speak against your government (ie: Political activism), speak against a certain institution (family, marriage, religion)

In many countries, if one spoke out against a faction or critiqued a religion, they would be killed.

Human rights is non-existant in many of the world today.

And America and many of the westernized countries (although flawed in certain aspects) have applied the "freedom of speech" well.

A quote of Intellectual/Author Ayaan Hirsi:

"I've read about democracy, and I've lived in countries that had no democracy, that had no founding fathers, that could not resolve, so I don't find myself in the same luxury as you. You grew up in freedom, and you can spit on freedom, because you don't know what it is not to have freedom. I haven't. I know that there are many things wrong with America, and I know there are many things wrong with Americans, but I still believe it's the best nation in the world."
