American Obesity and Oil

Can anyone find the link/links? Does our absurd consumption of oil contribute to the fast growing epidemic of American obesity?

Or is it just another outrageous assumption?

Yep, were all fat, cause we practically breathe grease. its gross.

Yes that's true, a lot of oil goes into the things we eat.

But now think in a realm outside of food...does oil affect our lifestyles? Think about everyday things that are made from or use oil that can contribute to obesity.

Oil is currency it's nothing new, why do you think Sud's still have a country, no one cares what they do as long as they keep the black money flowing. Myanmar is perfect example. China would not make a crack down on sanctions because they feared they'd lose an oil pipeline same with Russia :)

I'm not sure how this has anything to do with my question...but okay.

Lmao, wrong oil :) I highly doubt vegetable oil has anything to do with you getting fatter.

  • Renee

No, you were talking about the right oil. I just didn't see your connection to obesity in America. You just talked about it being a currency. I already know that...but how does it affect the obesity problem?

That's self discipline :) You're fat because you let yourself become so.

  • Renee

That's true Ryan, I agree that it is a matter of self discipline. But I'm wondering if you think that oil plays a crucial part in America not being disciplined enough...

Britt- HOW does the oil consumption further along weight gain? It definitley shouldn't be something they can hide behind, it something they should look at and realize that it's not just diet and excercise that need to be changed about people's lifestyles.

Let me give an example: do you agree that the oil that is put into making the technologies that we use, such as video games, computers, and tv's, adds to the obesity factor?

The oil that we put in cars allows us to conveniantly walk out our front door and step into a seat and drive to our destination, get out of the car and take two steps into a building. Instead of walking six blocks to catch a bus or riding your bike.

Do these examples seem absurd to link to obesity?

A little off topic but WTF is with the Video game bashing, and computers soon as someone has an issue they jump on us nerds back to get a little piece of action?! Seriously not cool.

  • Renee

Video games and computers disable us. When you sit on your butt all day playing video games or messing around on the computer, you're contributing to your ability to become obese. I'm not bashing anyone, I just think that these things contribute to obesity.

Hey I play at least eight hours of video games a day at least, and I jog, work out all that fun stuff. And most the nerds I know don't have time to eat while playing video games... and they're skinnny mofos so, eh? Misconception :)

The two reasons why I do not have a car despite my ability to get one:

Point A) The costs to maintain a running vehicle. One of the chief money-guzzling costs is indeed gas. Transportation can take anywhere from 15%-30% of the average persons paycheck.

Point B) Health benefits, walking to and from school every day keeps me fit.

Sure, vehicles are much quicker but I really enjoy my walking time.

I really don't think that oil is the source of the problem. A teaspoon of mayonnaise is 100 calories for example. Simply dolloping that onto your sandwich can cost you to gain weight. To remain the same, an adult male only has to eat 2,500 calories a day without any exercise. Create a 500 deficiency amongst exercise and he's losing a pound plus some a week. There are many fattening things people don't suspect to be very fattening that make them end up rapidly gaining weight. 100ml of cooking oil IS 1,000 calories, but lots of things also add to that and plumet the scales up. Oil isn't the only thing hurting people's health and verging them onto obesity, if they use it too much, it doesn't help, but gather all the fatty food or oversized meal portions and you're next time you step on the scales you're probably 2 stone more than you were before. People don't realise exactly how much they are eating, even if it's 2 junk food meals a day with an addition of chocolate, crisps and biscuits, they probably don't know that 1 chocolate covered biscuit contains 60 calories, and then by the time they're done they're through half the packet without even realising what they were eating was pure calories. We shove things in our mouth, and we have no idea when to stop. Restaurant sized meals are about 3 times more than an average homemade meal, unless you consume that much at home as well. An entire bag of M&S salad leaves is 12 calories. 1 Murray Mint is 30. etc etc etc. We're all way too behind on knowledge of our foods and daily needs. It's not even exercise, though that would be good, that desperately needs to happen. It's cutting down and knowing when to stop.

Britt by playing video games, I mean skipping two weeks of school so you could stay on the top of a realm list in Starcraft :) And not sleeping for four days... that's what I meant by nerd. And, that's why we should have mandatory time for you to enlist in the army at least two years. It'll stop the kids dead in there tracks. But we're getting off topic, yes, some of the luxuries that oil has brought us do make us fat, I do agree with that, but it all comes down to if you want to be fat :)

Also, you can be very active with stomach crunches and lifting weight while playing a game.. do it all the time when I'm playing World of Warcraft.

Were complaining about sitting on our butts in front of the comp.. but isnt that what were doing right now?

BANGBANG: I agree with you, the bigger part of the problem comes from lack of excercise and lack of knowledge about what we are putting into our mouths. I was just wondering if people thought it to be absurd that we can also blame oil for it, too.

In my English 101 class today, this is what we talked about. My teacher is in her mid-40's, and she said that it is very strange to see the way people are today. She said teenagers were not the same size when she was young. American society is so used to having everything we want, when we want it. We demand for more more more...there's just so many things that we could do without that could save oil. America accounts for 1% of the population...but we use 25% of natural resources in the entire world. Do we really need all this oil? no of course not. But greed is human nature, and American's seem to be full of it right now. The author of this essay that we were discussing made a valid point: "Many products from oil allow and, I beleive, encourage unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles." I personally think it IS a factor, maybe not the biggest but definitley one of them.

I guess its not just the delimma of US.. its a world wide issue... i got friends who are obesse and they have trouble like in everything...
    clothes
    dating
    friends
    food
    and trouble getting thin...

instead of questioning or creticizing those fatty people perhaps they need more acceptance... they are emotionally disturbe.. its not easy to be in that situation when u cant have what u want since ur are fat but still human

I dunno who said the Army thing but... that's a good idea. :) Lol.

Not forcing people into the Army but maybe a mandatory excercise thing. Every guy needs to be able to do at least fifty push-ups in a minute and a half. Girls have to do twenty five or something. Everyone needs to be able to run two miles. Things like that.
