Great challenge Ann Marie to make us more concious of the types of feedback to leave on a poem.....and to recognize those great comments as well!

    This is an ace idea....

    Hellon:
I agree to a certain extent, you may find people leave false comments just in the effort of gaining a praise. There are guidelines to follow for praising comments. You do have to explain why you are praising a comment ...

A comment worthy of praise should do one of the following ..

"Offer an insight into the meaning of the poem from the point of view of the reader, or what they thought the writer was aiming for.

Offer advice, politely put, about how to potentially improve or alter the poem.

Express the personal feelings of how the piece made the reader react, which should be more varied than the standard empty response: "Hey good poem, love it, good work".

Write any kind of response, not covered by the above examples, that has some point to it, something of worth of interest that is linked to what the author wrote."

This list is not exhaustive though.

So - a praiser would have to make sure they could explain why it is worthy, then a mod reviews the praise before it is accepted.

With regards to you feeling cheated because you wanted to praise someone, but someone had done it before you got chance. Ann-Marie, is aware of this problem and is to the belief that a comment worthy of praise doesn't really mean it can only be praised once. I would hope she is looking into changing it.

Hellon, you can always send that person a private message thanking them for the comment. So often, praises come in with personal messages to the commenter...and the commenter never sees them.

Since the mods do not wish to become a messenger service, it would be best to let someone else praise the comment and you send your accolades to them through the PM system.
    ----

does it really matter the motive of leaving a good comment? Like Pete listed, it has to meet certain criteria... so if it meets that criteria, does it really matter if they put it there in order to get a praise?

This "challenge" won't last forever... I'm hoping that it will kick-start a revolution of sorts to proper commenting.

I am so glad to see so many participating after the slow start last week!!

Ann Marie I just wanted to thank you for this challenge.....I have learned allot from it......I didn't really know how to leave a proper comment. Or what to say when praising someone else's comment.

Hellon, you can always send that person a private message thanking them for the comment. So often, praises come in with personal messages to the commenter...and the commenter never sees them.

Hellon a PM thanking some one for their comment means so much more. When it is coming from the writer of the piece.

This really is not worth arguing over. I see your point, and if you really don't want other people praising the comments left on your poems then put that in your profile.

However, I must reiterate that other than the line under the poem, the commenter does not see anything written in a praise. It is much more effective to send them a PM if you wish to thank them.

You know I think people who really make special effort to leave quality comments that are praised and passed by Mods should get some kind of award.

I say this being someone who does not approve of the current award system for posts, favourites etc, because those things are not any assurance of the quality or effort of contribution.

This compitition has really shown me at least, that rewarding and recognising people who are good at helping others to write better could have a positive effect on the site, because lots of people like to be recognised, and if they must have little letters next to their name then at least let them earn them in a way the benifits everyone.

And people will actually learn how to comment properly if there is some kind of award for it that actually can be seen next to their name.

Of course this needs programming assistance, but I think the effects could be ace.

Kevin, hopeully this will spur Janis to activate that "critic of the month" award (or something similar) that was his original intention when he installed the praise button. For now, this is thier reward, we are making known who the quality commenters are.

Hellon, after this challenge is over, the praisers will never get any kind of reward or even recognition. I'm hoping that this challenge has educated people to actually do it and get in the habit of watching for good quality comments.

    Good Job everyone

I see it as trying to show membeers how to leave a good quality comment instead of the usual well done 5/5

If someone learns how to leave a good comment then it will improve the poems on this site some.

So a bad poem doesn't deserve a good comment that offers suggestions on how to make it better?

The idea is that everyone comment properly on the poems they read.

I do understand your concern, Hellon, and don't worry, I didn't take it personally.

I have seen many poems on here and when I leave a comment pointing out things I often recieve a PM thanking me.

That is what is important.. good poem or bad is that someone learns from the comments and appreciates that another took time to comment honestly.

  • sassychick

To be honest, I have another account... but that does not matter.

What matters is the message..not who gives it or where it comes from, but just that it is heard.

But before, they weren't using it at all.. or using it as if they thought it was a way to communicate with the commenter, which it is not.

Why don't we just say this: Anyone who is participating in this challenge as a praiser, please refrain from praising comments left on Hellon's poems. Thank you.

I have never had this before, but I was going through my comments, to catch up on praising and noticed some I could not because someone else had already done so. If the comment is left for me, on my work how can someone cheat me out of being able to praise the reader?
