Could you take some of your old clothes, and perhaps sell them to a second-hand type store, like Plato's Closet? (That might be a local thing, actually. But hopefully you know what I mean.)

I'm assuming you have clothes that you don't wear anymore, if you just bought 300 dollars worth of new ones. I'd say... don't make that a habit? : )

^ on that note, how much do you make by donating blood? and what are the requirements???

food stamps? where do you get those, i have a drugstore club card, but you have to spend like 300.00 just to get 5.00 off.

my area only has a goodwill, which i think only excepts donations, besides i need all my clothe, i like layering, plus i go to school, and work in a business environment, so I need two different wardrobes>>>my clothing expenses were a lot this week because i had to buy new clothes for winter.

but i hope those food stamps, and donating blood will help me out,

    any other suggestions?

Other, is honestly just random stuff, but if we have to get into it:

    -soap
    -deodorant
    -perfumes
-this usb thingy for wireless internet that got busted
-food for this party we had at school
    -art supplies

yeah just stuff, mostly hygiene products

i got the cutest new plaid jacket for only 35.50, and shoes for only 24.99, so i can save here and there

the only thing that was a tad ridiculous was this black blazer i got for 50, but it goes with everything, so it was a good investment.

but I'm not as broke as it may seem, I've been saving for college since grade 10, so i have like 4 grand in my savings, the problem i have is with my chequeing account because i always end up transferring funds from savings

and it's not like i don't work hard, i work part time for only 8.30 an hour 25 hours a week on top of school, so i want my hard work to pay off in the end but the rate i'm spending at is not taking me anywhere

Wow, your budget is really really tight, I can't even breathe just thinking about it. Don't you want to eventually settle into a house instead of paying rent?

You should move to Canada free health care, and our dollar is worth more :P

What will happen when one day BAM! your car breaks down, will you have to start walking to work?

Or whats if you get kicked out of your home.

Or what if someone dies in a different country, and you have to pay for a flight for their funeral.

Seriously, the fact that I'm so dependent on money scares me.

I mean I have family who would support me, but I don't know how far they'd stretch their wallets in certain situations. No wonder so many women decide to become housewives.

*I solemnly swear I will not spend any, I mean practically any of my next paycheque.*

Whew, you definitely have it all figured out.

money confuses me, especially budgets, i mean theres always emergencies, (not someone dying in another country, but you know, emergencies)

i mean with x-mas coming up, i don't like to be the cheapo of the family.

too bad i haven't got a response about that whole blood/kidney donating thing/

I wouldn't mind doing a bone marrow transplant either, but I would feel bad charging a family money when they're going through such a difficult time.

I know you can get paid for donating plasma. I think you're able to do it every few weeks, at maybe... 50 dollars a time? I'm really not sure, but I have a friend who does it.

You know after reading through this, it saddens me how people can't be bothered to learn the value of money.
There are a lot of people worse off than you and you don't hear then complaining.
Buy things you NEED, not WANT. And even then, they don't have to be desighner.
Sheez, me and Marcus are saving like crazy for a house and a car, scrimping every penny and there are people blowing money on trivial things and then whining they don't have any..
    The logic is screwed up.

  • Gem

Lol, it's the same here nearly except Marcus is sloooowly learning the value now we need to save for xmas as well, lmao.
It's a hard lesson to learn all right!

    ***

lol. not complaining because I don't have enough money, I'm asking for tips on how to save money. Trying to save for college here, and it's not like I don't work hard for my money. Since I work hard do I not deserve to have some luxuries? Really the only thing I need is food clothe and shelter, depending on how you define 'needs'. Besides, the people who are worse off than me don't even have internet, so obviously we don't hear them complaining.

That reminds me, should I stop donating money to solicitors? I mean, does that even go to charity? Or am I just wasting my money? And what about homeless people? Do they just use my donations for cigarettes and booze?

I live in Toronto, by the way.

    Um, that's your tip?

    lol, alright then.

honestly thats not helpful, it's like telling someone whose addicted to tobacco to have some self control.

it's more helpful if you teach them how to cut back slowly, but thanks anyways...

but honestly britt all your suggestions were awesome, and everyone else with there great tips on how to buy and sell cheap.

"i got the cutest new plaid jacket for only 35.50, and shoes for only 24.99, so i can save here and there"

Thats what i meant when i said it saddens me people don't know the value of money.

You call that saving here and there? I have the same things that i got for just over £10. I'm sorry but spending that much when you don't have the money? I find it pathetic, those things aren't a 'must'.

Swing around a pole a few times nancy drew...you'll have plenty of money for clothes and you'll never have to get up early or budget for stuff...and it's not like you'll need lots of "work clothes".

I make stupid money in Edinburgh..and I don't have to budget anything...but I'm still an avid bargain hunter....prowling the charity shops and retro second hand places...not only do you find cooler stuff...but you mee the most interesting people.

  • T uh Belle lll

^ I don't get it, do you want me to become a stripper, swinging around a pole? :O

I got the cutest new plaid jacket for only 35.50, and shoes for only 24.99, so i can save here and there,

those were a 'must', winter is cold here, i would have frozen to death if i didn't buy that coat, i'm actually wearing it right now, (they canceled school for a snow day)

    in Canada that's considered cheap.

    jackets are usually about 79.95 + 15% tax, shoes usually 99.95 15%

total would normally come to: 206.88... not even kidding.

I'll try that mall in Mississauga, I would go to yard sales, but we don't have any in the winter.

Any other places or stores with cheap stuff?

  • Gem

Thats bull, i've researched online that Canada is one the cheapest places to buy things. They cost a fraction of what it costs in the UK and we all manage over here. I'm sure you could have found a cheaper coat elsewhere or used an old one!
I just bought a new winter coat for myself for my birthday for 15 pounds and THAT m'dear was a splurge. There are more important things that money needs to go on.

Look, you asked for advice, here it is.
Stop wasting your money on things you want but don't need. It's called self restraint, give it a go. I'd kill to spend 35.50 on a jacket! but most of us know when to hold back for things we really need.

  • T uh Belle lll

Canada is cheap? Are you kidding me? Ask any Torontonian why they go to Buffalo to go back to school shopping every year.

I mean for someone in the UK it would seem cheap, because there dollar is worth about 70 cents more.

And yes I have been to the UK, my aunt lives there.

Your advice is good, and obviously I'm trying, why else do you think I came here? Because I wanted advice on ways to save.

But I refuse to say that jacket was not cheap, because it was on sale, and jackets are usually way more.

I mean please, I make money. I'm not going to buy a smelly old unfashionable jacket from Goodwill.

and you shouldn't either. you deserve better.

quality in clothing is just as important as pricing, and ends up lasting way longer.

this is an awesome coat, reversible, fleece on the inside, Eskimo style hood, tons of pockets, will last years, oh and it matches with everything. okay i'm going to stop gushing over my coat. ^__^

    All right, ok, enough arguing.

    Let me think.

Have you tried looking at yard sales and charity shops. You can still find designer clothes at the fraction of a price.

Having your friends round for a clothes swap is always a good idea (if you're the same size of course) and you also manage to get rid of clothes you don't wear anymore

Alternatively, have you tried sites such as ebay for essentials and clothing? It's also a lot cheaper and there is always a money back guarantee.

Thats all i got at the moment apart from the rule of buy what you need not what you want and keep an eye out for bargains

  • T uh Belle lll

Lol okay, we'll agree to disagree, besides i already took off the tags on that coat, so it's not like i can return it.

There is this awesome shop here called Winners, designer clothing for brand name prices, it's not bad, but finding sizes can be difficult. If your looking for a small it will fit like an extra large, and if you want and extra large it will fit like a small.

    Clothing swap, well thats ingeniousness!

    Ebay, I wish I could, but I can't get a credit card til I'm 18, and my mom won't co-sign.

But thank-you for the awesome tips!

I think I have enough tips by now

  • Gem
