Most people remember Vincent van Gogh as an artist. And few know that he really cared for those in need......giving all he had until he was poor himself. His church hearing of his "morbid generosity" Banned him from returning to their services. His family wanted him committed to an insane asylum for his constent want to aid others. His depression deepened with time until he toke his life, believing that he had failed at everything. How come We choose to persecute those who feel for the lost and broken, why must we call them freaks when all they want is to give something to those who truly need it? Even if it means that they have to do without. |

Growing up with a father who was a pastor and the time he spent in poverty, I think they looked down on him more for losing his faith. Coupled with his depression and angst about the world around him, he checked himself into the asylum. He had a very close relationship with his brother Theo, so his whole family was not against him. He did have some problems though. Compassion is different for everyone, what we recognize as compassionate, another might see as crazy. I still say, give until it hurts. |
